Myrtle "Myrt" May Bauer (Fenstermaker), 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 25, 2026. Born April 3, 1935, to the late Lloyd and Lydia Fenstermaker, Myrt was raised with love by her father and stepmother, Charlotte, following her mother's early passing. She cherished memories of her beloved late siblings: Lloyd, Ruth, Edith, and stepbrother Charles.
Defying the 1950s norm, Myrt acted as a woman of her own counterculture by asserting her independence to pursue a demanding nursing career through Allegheny General Hospital Nursing School. As a proud graduate, she worked at various hospitals throughout the Pittsburgh region.
Myrt's caregiving shone brightest when it came to family. She married Walter Bauer and became a loving, dedicated, high-energy mother to her three sons: 'Ronnie,' 'Richie' and 'Bobby.' While juggling her full-time career, she played an active role in Cub Scouts, youth football with the Bellevue Colts, and Bellevue-Avalon baseball.
As a longtime member of Forest Avenue Presbyterian Church, Myrt played an active role in her faith. Aside from raising her family, one of her proudest accomplishments was serving as a Sunday School teacher to many, many children over the decades. Not only volunteering substantial time as a member of the choir, Myrt also committed many hours to the fundraising effort of making thousands of nut rolls for the church. If you had ever eaten a nut roll from Forest Avenue Presbyterian Church, she probably had a hand in creating it. With love.
Myrt's crowning achievement was her role as a nurturing, devoted grandmother. 'Gram' played an integral part of her grandchildren's lives, showing it best by being steadfastly present. Whether at a sporting event, school function or life milestone, Gram was always so proud and their biggest fan. Gram truly left a lasting impression with her children and grandchildren by being generous with her big heart, her hugs and her 'I love you's.'
Also, she was simply the very best mother-in-law.
Myrtle was buried next to her late husband, Walter George Bauer, at the Allegheny County Memorial Park Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA, on Friday, March 27, 2026. Myrtle is survived by her three children, Ronald (Teresa), Richard (Tracy) and Robert, and four grandchildren, Adam (Kimberly), Max, Kasia and Kit.
