Nakia Freddie Barnes, affectionately known as "Nick," passed away unexpectedly on July 20, 2025, in his hometown of Washington, DC. Born on February 14, 1975, Nick was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of many.
Nick received his education through the Prince Georges County Public Schools System, laying the foundation for a career that spanned roles as an Office Assistant and in customer service. His ability to connect with others was evident in both his professional and personal life, where he was known for his down-to-earth demeanor and infectious laughter. A true jokester, he had a unique talent for brightening any room with his humor and warmth, making him a cherished companion.
As a die-hard fan of the Washington Redskins, Nick proudly bled burgundy and gold, and his adventurous spirit was matched only by his intelligence and calm, cool presence. A devoted family man, he relished spending time with his grandchildren, creating cherished memories filled with love, laughter, and good food. Nick's nurturing personality fostered deep connections with his family and friends, who will forever hold him fondly in their hearts.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Darnell Jones Barnes, and his children Morea and Malik; Mia and Misha; Dauntez; Taliyah; Xondra; and Zyquan, Marie Augustus, and DaShe.' Nick embraced the role of grandfather to Malakai, Makiya, Envy, Kehlani, Avery, Aree, Nieem, Jayden, Cree, Elijah, Xora Marie, bringing joy and laughter into their lives.
Nick is also survived by his mother, Thelia Turner, and sisters Tonya, and Lashawn, devoted brother Alonzo (Turner-Bey), alongside nephew Launte Turner, and goddaughter Jalaysia Hayes and a whole host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who adored him. He was preceded in death by his fathers, Freddie Barnes Sr. and Herbert "Rickey" Turner; brothers Pedro "Freddie" and Juan "Cricket"; and nephew Raymond Turner.
In this difficult time, the love and memories of Nakia Freddie Barnes will continue to provide comfort to those he leaves behind. His legacy of laughter, love, and unwavering support will remain a guiding light for all who knew him.
