Nancy Halewood Obituary
November 13, 1935 - May 4, 2021
Our mother passed away peacefully on May 4th. Her struggle with Alzheimers is finished, it's been a hard battle for our independent mom. Nancy was born in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Ethel and Harold Jackson. She is preceded in death by her sister Lynn Jackson Moustakes.
A graduate of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Nursing in Boston, our mother never wanted to be a nurse on a medical unit, she thought most illnesses were "in your head' consequently she devoted her working life to serving those with severe mental illness. She first worked in a State hospital then in psychiatric day hospitals in Philadelphia and Boston. Mom taught us early that everyone deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. Mom taught by example, she brought home visits of people who never lived outside of State hospitals for the mentally ill. We are proud of her professional dedication and hard work ethic. She co-developed a nationally recognized rural mental health outreach program in coastal South Carolina. Although a New Englander to her core, she spent the last 30 years in North and South Carolina, staying close to us, her children and families.
Nancy was a single mother to her 3 children; Doug (Cindy) Halewood (Mt. Pleasant,SC); Wendy (Mike) Brenner (Winston -Salem, NC) and Robin Halewood (Ted) Guerard (Mt. Pleasant, SC). "Geema" to her grandchildren; Zach Halewood, Emma Blumstein, Lindsay Halewood, Rachel Ravenal, Sam Blumstein, Mary Guerard, and 2 great-grandchildren; Jackson and McCrae. She also is survived by Jessica Moustakes Ulianelli (niece) and Galen Moustakes (nephew).
Nancy loved her rescue dogs, the beach, jazz music, gardening and reading Agatha Christie mysteries.
Our family offers gratitude to Rona Klein and the staff of Westerly Place as well as the caring committee of St. Anne's church. If you would like to make a donation on Nancy's behalf we suggest; St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 2690 Fairlawn Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or Alzheimer's Assoc Salemtowne Walk for the Cure Team.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2021 outside St. Anne's Episcopal Church. Condolences may be made online at www.salemfh.com.
