Nothing has greater power to make us find ourselves contemptible as learning (as I've just done) that a marvelous, beautiful friend like Nancy has vanished from the earth, cancelling every hope of recalling intended goodbyes to life Thus the deaths of our important others dpth make fools and villains of us all -- just as surely as our own deaths take us beyond the hills of self-judgment, which is the most noticeable way that death "gives us a break" we never deserved. Nancy, please take our love with you on your trip beyond those hills.
