Nancy Macfarlane Obituary

Visit the Nelson Family Mortuary website to view the full obituary.
For Nancy Ann Valberg Macfarlane, the many years of pain are gone, along with the need for her prosthesis and her wheelchair, she having passed from this life on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at the age of 84.

And though her constant smile and happy countenance have followed her, their positive impact on countless friends and family will long remain, as the title of her life history, "With a Grateful Heart," reflects.

Nancy Ann was born January 6, 1942 in Brigham City, Utah to John Hansen Valberg and Nancy Emmett Valberg, the second of three children. She spent the first 21 years of her life there, attending Lincoln Elementary School, Box Elder Junior High and Box Elder High School, where she graduated in 1960.

In 1962 she was proud to represent Brigham City and Box Elder County as an attendant in the Peach Queen royalty. Later, while Nancy Ann was at Utah State University, she met her husband-to-be, Larry D. Macfarlane, whom she married on August 22, 1963 in the Logan LDS Temple. She later attended BYU where she was named "Outstanding Student" at BYU's English Education Awards Banquet. She graduated from Utah State University in 1992.

In six decades together, they raised four sons, each coming to them in a different state, as they moved around the country for Larry's career with the Bell System. Nancy Ann was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, mostly serving in Relief Society presidencies (for over 40 years).

Over the years she was employed in various jobs, including being a checker and cashier

at Valberg's Market in Brigham City from 1956 to 1963; as a secretary at Leyson-Pearsal Jewelers in Salt Lake City in 1963 and 1964; as legal secretary to attorney Jim Tice in Denver, Colorado from 1983 to 1985; and as a Student Teaching Supervisor at BYU from 1993 to 2002.

She greatly enjoyed traveling, especially on more than a dozen cruises, where she made new friends that she kept in touch with over the years. Her most precious treasures were her testimony of her savior and her family and friends. She noted all family and friends' birthdays on her calendar and, until peripheral neuropathy in her hands compromised her writing, she sent birthday cards out literally by the scores each year.

She is survived by her husband Larry, her four sons Larry V, John Dean, Drew and Mitch plus 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, a brother John Valberg and his wife Carol Reeder Valberg, and a brother-in-law Romney Buck. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Kathleen Buck and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins.

Her funeral service will be held in the Nelson Family Mortuary at 4800 North University Avenue, Provo, Utah on Friday, April 3, at 10:30am with a viewing from 9:15am to 10:30am prior to the service.

Internment will be in the Brigham City, Utah Cemetery at 300 East 300 South, in Brigham City.
