Nancy Logsdon Mandelkorn, 62, died at her home in Takoma Park, Maryland, the morning of April 5, 2015.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to her parents Margaret and Robert Logsdon, Nancy was a mother, feminist, writer, public relations administrator, community organizer and social justice advocate. Throughout her life, Nancy volunteered and worked with social justice groups, advocating on behalf of peace, women's issues and community building. She was a gardening enthusiast and a supporter and admirer of the arts.

Nancy spent her youth in Pleasant Plain, Ohio, and was an international traveller during her early adult years. At the age of 25, Nancy settled in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where she raised her five children, earned a Bachelors Degree from Norfolk State University and began a career as a writer and public relations administrator. In the late 1980s, Nancy was both an editorial and feature writer and a photographer for the Virginian-Pilot. In the 1990s she was a Public Relations Manager at Virginia Wesleyan College. In 1999, Nancy made an appearance on ABC’s television program, The View, advocating on behalf of feminist spirituality. After moving to the Washington, D.C. area in 2000, Nancy settled in Takoma Park, Maryland, and worked as a consultant. During her later years, Nancy lived with her domestic partner, Loraine Hutchins, where she continued to mentor young international students and professionals, in addition to working at a local community-owned business.

Nancy is survived by her sister Barbara White; five children, Beth Mandelkorn, Heather Mandelkorn, Joel Mandelkorn, Uriah Mandelkorn and Emily Mandelkorn; three grandchildren, Corry Mandelkorn, Gaia Jacobs and Devon Stroud. Nancy’s second child, Precious Mandelkorn, died at child birth.

My mother died when I was young, Nancy took me under her wing for 6 years. She taught me the gentle ways of the Moon and the Sun, the gentle whispers of the trees (Willow her favorite). Nancy truly knew what it meant to "live in awe" of everything magical around you. I wish I could have said goodbye and looked into her eyes and told her what she meant to my life. Every lesson she taught me I take with me forever. And Those lessons I have passed on to my son. Your legacy lives on in my home forever.

I'm a woman who knew Nan through an online pelvic mesh injury support group. All of us in the group are so sad to hear of Nan's death. She was a valued member of our group, and we will continue to work in her memory to get polypropylene mesh banned from the market, so that no other women have to suffer this way. Prayers to Nan's family and friends. She will be missed dearly.

I have known and loved Nancy since the day she was born. My two sons, Marvin, Roger, and I will miss her very much. We have spent many pleasant times together, both in Ohio and in Arizona. Our time together the past year was very special; I cherish those times. My condolences go out to her family, her children and her special friends. Nancy, you were loved !

So sorry to hear of your loss, Lorraine. 62 is far too young. What a tough couple of years for you! I can see why you and Nancy would have been a perfect match - sounds like such a vibrant person. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet her. Thank you for letting me know. Peace to you. - Heather

Nancy was a model for us all. I was touched by her very open life and views from the moment I met her. She will always be alive in my heart.

Knowing Nan was an honor. I always learned something new from her each time we talked, and I learned still more from reading this. She was a great example of the kind of woman I would like to be and remain. Open, thoughtful, kind, intelligent, substantial, caring, the list of adjectives goes on. She wasn't just an outside-the-box person -- she seemed to not have known the box. What box? She was a person of the light. Nan, I will not forget you.
