Nancy McUmber Swarthout, 81, of Corning, NY, passed away peacefully at Absolute Care of Three Rivers on Friday, May 9, 2025. Born on June 1, 1943, in Corning, Nancy was the daughter of the late Arthur and Emma (Ross) McUmber. She attended Corning Free Academy and went on to lead a life devoted to family and community.
Nancy married the love of her life, Kenneth Swarthout, with whom she shared a deep commitment to caregiving and family. Together, they opened their home and hearts to over 50 foster children, adopting seven of them and creating a warm, loving home filled with laughter and unconditional support.
In addition to being a dedicated homemaker, Nancy worked briefly at Corning Hospital, the A&P plant, and Rhinehart Sand and Gravel. But her true calling was in the nurturing of others - a gift she gave selflessly throughout her life.
Nancy was a beacon of generosity and compassion. She was always willing to help those in need, forming lasting bonds with every child she cared for. Many of her foster children returned later in life to thank her and Ken for the positive impact they had on their lives.
She was known for her love of gatherings, hosting large summer parties to celebrate each new addition to the family or simply to bring people together. Her celebrations were marked by joyful music, delicious food, and the company of not just family, but teachers, school staff, and anyone who had touched her children's lives.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Swarthout; her parents Arthur and Emma McUmber; her sisters Patricia Cahill and Sally Crowl; and her brother Thomas McUmber.
She is survived by her beloved children: Kenny Swarthout; Dawn Snyder; Lore' Quick (Greg); Billy Swarthout (Caitryn); Greg Swarthout; Michael Swarthout; Jaison Swarthout; Sheila Swarthout; Evin Swarthout; Michael Konopski (Carolyn); and Michele Fitch (Joe Spagnoli).
She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Chloe Swarthout, Konnor Clark, Karter Clark, Kaitlyn Quick, Ethan Quick, Elizabeth Carson, Emma Swarthout, Derek Konopski, Jacob Konopski, Daniel Konopski, Patrick Fitch, and Audrey DeMarie; and great-grandchildren: Abigail Carson and Ava DeMarie.
Nancy will be remembered for her loving nature, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney Street, Corning, NY on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. A private graveside service will be held in Rural Home Cemetery in Big Flats.
