Tom, Stephen, Jill, David, Rosa, Amon, Caleb, Fiona and Duncan,

I was thinking of you yesterday as you celebrated Carlene's life during her memorial service. I would have loved to have been there to share my memories of my friend and colleague. It truly was a gift to me when I changed positions at Richland and ended up working with Carlene. She easily handled responsibilities in our division such as assuring that the schedule of course offerings was entered in the system accurately and by the assigned date. We never had to ask for an extension even though we were one of the largest divisions at the college. She had so many outstanding qualities and was respected and admired by all our faculty and staff. Chief among these were her trustworthiness, great sense of humor, intelligence, dedication, honesty, and professionalism. I was sad when she retired because we needed her at Richland and because it felt like losing my best friend. I relied on Carlene and benefited from her support, caring and kindness. She loved her family so much and celebrated the birth and achievements of each grandchild. I didn't want to believe that her cancer had returned because I couldn't bear the thought of her being in physical or emotional pain. But I know from you, Tom, that she handled this challenge as well as she has all other ordeals in her life. I am heartbroken that Carlene is gone.
