Memorial banner Nathaniel Carpenter January 03, 1947 - December 20, 2025 Nathaniel Carpenter, affectionately known as "The Professor," passed away on December 20, 2025. Nathaniel's life was a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit, his dedication to education, and his passion for family, boxing, and the great outdoors. Born on January 3, 1947, Nathaniel embarked on a journey filled with diverse achievements and adventures. He shared a remarkable 55-year marriage with Vernita (Carmichael), a partnership marked by love and mutual support. Together, they built a painting business in Ponca City before relocating to Hays, Kansas, where Nathaniel pursued higher education with fervor. He attained both an undergraduate and a master's degree in Communications, as well as a master's in History from Fort Hays State University. His commitment to education extended to teaching a semester of History at Barton County Community College, where he shared his passion for the past with eager minds. In Hays, Nathaniel coached boxing and proudly nurtured talent that blossomed into a Golden Glove Champion. His love for the sport was only matched by his enthusiasm for fishing and gardening. During his time in Ponca City, he initiated a community garden, reflecting his belief in nurturing growth not just in plants, but in people too. Nathaniel's culinary skills were legendary; he was a master fry cook whose perfectly golden chicken and expertly prepared fish delighted many. These skills served him well as he worked his way through college, cooking for big hotels and the campus cafeteria. Nathaniel's legacy is defined by his warmth and ability to leave a lasting impression on all who met him. Known for imparting life lessons during everyday conversations, he was a true teacher at heart, always eager to share his wisdom and insights. He is survived by Malcolm Norris (Whitney), Michael Norris (Sonya), Sangai Norris, Vernita (Carmichael), Abraham Carpenter Sr, Eli Carpenter Sr (Hazel), Riley Carpenter Sr, Pastor Elijah Carpenter, Emma Burr (James), Josephine Watson (O.T.), Roseine Ficklin, Mildred Crane (Clarence), Mattie Craig, Loraine Davis (Demetrius), Elizabeth Yarbrough, Elisa Collins, and four great-grandchildren.
