Neil Bergman Obituary

Visit the Shalom Memorial Funeral Home - Arlington Heights website to view the full obituary.
Neil Bergman, 92, passed away peacefully November 27, 2025. Beloved husband for 65 years to Lois, nee Segal; devoted father of Robin Bergman (Gregg Minkow), Franci (Mike) Feirstein, and Adam (Olga) Bergman; cherished grandfather of Brad (Jen) Minkow, Dawn Minkow (Reeyaz Hamirani), Landon Minkow, Joely Feirstein, Miriam Bergman, and Myer Bergman; proud great-grandfather of Mila and Sloane Minkow; loving brother of David (Arlene) Bergman and brother-in-law of Dr. Norman (Arlene) Segal; treasured uncle to Jeff (Marcie) Bergman, Jodi (Stuart) Urkov, Jeremy (Missy) Segal, and Jenna (Jordan) Zahn; adored great-uncle, cousin, and friend of many.

Neil was a proud veteran, earning the rank of Corporal in the Army, serving from 1955 to 1957. He went to law school at night, at Emory University in Atlanta, then finished up at DePaul University and Kent College of Law here in Chicago, while working full-time at Miller, Cooper and Co. and quickly becoming Partner. Through his vision and leadership, he helped transform a small accounting firm into one of the top firms in the Midwest - branching out into consulting and estate, succession, and wealth planning.

Neil was always an athlete: a runner until his 40s, took aerobics classes at the JCC with his wife and kids, an avid spinner and tennis player until he was 90, golfed, did yoga and meditation. He walked an hour a day with Lois until he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at 92. In his 70s, Neil served as a camp counselor for years every summer with his son Adam, at Camp One Step - a camp for kids with cancer. He was donor to several charities, a frequent blood donor, and served on the Skokie Rotary Club and on the boards of all of his homeowners' associations. He managed investments for several family members and was always sending his kids and grandkids articles about finance, health, and any other subject he thought would help in their lives. He loved going to his kids' sporting events, and then his grandkids'. Neil was an exceptional human who always put others first. He was unfailingly generous in every aspect. Always warm and friendly. Gentle and kind. Babies and dogs (any animal, really) gravitated to him. Even while in Hospice, he wanted to take care of the caregivers, always asking if they had eaten, and making sure they had a warm coat when it started to get cold out. His absence leaves a void in many hearts, but his legacy will remain forever, and he will be loved for eternity.
