Neil Lempert Obituary

Lempert, Dr. Neil
DELMAR - Dr. Neil Lempert, a pillar of the surgical community in the Capital District of New York, passed away on December 6, 2022.
Born on November 25, 1933, in Astoria, N.Y., Dr. Lempert graduated from the famed Stuyvesant High School in 1950 and immediately matriculated at Hamilton College, where he won the Golding and Cobb essay prizes. He entered Albany Medical College in 1954 and did his surgical training under the direction of Dr. Charles Eckert. His surgical training included a year of transplantation research (1960-1961), and a year as a research fellow in transplant surgery at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y. (1963-1964), under the tutelage of Dr. David Blumenstock. His surgical research focused on the emerging field of organ transplantation. Immediately after completing his surgical training, he was conscripted into the United States Army. Serving as a captain, he spent six months of research in the burn ward at Brook Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Upon eight days' notice, he was transferred to the 249th Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, where he served out the remainder of his Army career caring for Vietnam casualties. He returned to Albany Medical College in 1967, where he rose to professor of surgery in 1978.
Dr. Lempert founded the Section of Transplant Surgery at the Albany Medical Center in 1969 and served as its director until 1992. In addition to his clinical and administrative leadership positions, Dr. Lempert also had an active basic science research program and is the author or co-author of 91 peer-reviewed publications, the bulk of which deal with various aspects of immunology and organ transplantation. Active in many surgical societies, he was particularly proud of his membership in the American Surgical Association.
Dr. Lempert was an excellent role model and beloved teacher for generations of medical students and surgical residents. He mentored medical student summer research fellows in his laboratory over a 28-year period. Many of these students won awards for the quality of their research. He took a personal interest in his students and residents and followed their careers long after they left his tutelage.
He was a leading figure in the Alpha Omega Medical Honor Society, serving as secretary of the Albany Chapter from 1985-1989, and counselor from 1989-2019. In this role, he mentored scores of outstanding students. The loyalty and affection of his students and residents were expressed in the establishment of the Neil Lempert Professorship in Surgery in 2005, and the establishment of the Judith and Neil Lempert, MD '58 Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2019.
An early pioneer in transplantation, Dr. Lempert remained engaged and intellectually curious to the end of his life. His life was characterized by love and loyalty for his family, friends, patients, students, and the Albany Medical College.
He was predeceased by his son, David. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Judy, their children, Elizabeth Markowitz, Heidi Zaner and her husband Dovid, Nina Lempert and her husband Ross Ginsberg, and Katie Sklar and her husband Mitchel; as well as nine grandchildren, Alex, Chaim, Yeshaya, Anna, Caroline, Yosef, Madeline, Corrine and Didi.
His family will remember him best for his enthusiasm for tennis and golf, the Saratoga Race Track, and a huge catalog of off-color jokes, to which he took great zeal in relating.
Services will be in the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave., Albany on Sunday, December 11, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, Dr. Lempert's family would appreciate donations to the Dr. Neil Lempert Endowed Chair in Surgery at Albany Medical, or to the Judith and Neil Lempert MD '58 Endowed Scholarship Fund. Donations may be sent c/o Albany Medical Foundation, 43 New Scotland Ave., MC-119, Albany, NY, 12208.

I am a graduate of Albany medical Center School of Nursing in 1974. He is one of the few doctors that I remember clearly from that ti.e. he was a strong personality but I remember him so well because I remember getting upset when he and a group of doctors came into a room with a patient who was medicated and not able to respond. They were discussing things that would not have been said in front of a conscious person. I said that we didn't know how much the patient was aware of what was going on. He apologized and had everyone leave the room to discuss the case. This was at a time when nurses stood up when they entered the room and you did not question them.. He entered the room later and thanked me. Not that is something you remember. Thank you Dr Lampert.

Neil and his family lived around the corner and became great family friends as I was growing up. Neil was always welcoming and curious about my life...maybe because our names were different by just one letter. He was a comfort to my parents in times of crisis and my heart is with his family now.

On behalf of my family and especially my parents, Julio and Nancy Sosa, please accept our very deepest condolences. Dr Lempert was a long-time colleague of my father's at Albany Medical College and I grew up with the Lempert family in Delmar. Dr Lempert was iconic and a remote inspiration for many in American surgery. We all grieve his loss; may his memory be a blessing.

What an amazing man - a great teacher, a phenomenal mentor, and a great conversationalist. Over the 30 years of my surgical career, I had the privilege of his wisdom and kindness. He will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to his beloved wife Judy, and his family.

Judy,

My deepest condolences to you and your entire family.

Neil was a Resident in Surgery while I was a Resident in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Albany Medical Center from 1963 to 1965. I hope you may remember me and my wife, Lynn, whom I met in Albany at that time, and whom I recently lost 2 years ago.

Neil and I had occasion to work together a number of times in those days.

He was always a mensch as well as a consummate professional. He will be fondly remembered.

Many years ago Dr. Lempert performed a kidney transplant on my mother. What a impact that had on my family. Not only were we able to hang onto her longer, but she went on to have grandchildren, and enjoy a wonderful retirement with my father.
Please accept my sincere condolences.
