In our lives there have been few people as special as Father Nello A. Barachini, a well loved and faithful servant of God. It is with profound sadness that we announce his entrance into eternal rest on May 20, 2022 at the age of 94. His acute wit, strength, intelligence and compassion will leave a deep, lasting impression on all he met in his lifetime. Father Nello was born in Albany, New York on February 18, 1928. A graduate of Bethlehem Central High School in 1947, he later studied at St. Joseph's Seminary, Holy Apostles College and The Angelicum University in Rome. He was ordained a Vincentian priest in 1986, obtaining degrees in Philosophy and Theology. In 1990, Father Nello came to the Diocese of Bridgeport serving in several parishes including St. Mark's in Stratford, St. Ambrose in Bridgeport and St. Margaret Mary in Shelton. Additionally, he served as Chaplain at Bridgeport Hospital for fourteen years, comforting and counseling the many patients there. Prior to entering the priesthood, Father Nello proudly served in the United States Navy. Following this he sailed as 2nd Officer in the United States Merchant Marine for 22 years. Father loved to read but unfortunately, due to vision loss, had to turn to audio books to continue his hobby. He especially enjoyed his annual trips to Texas with his sister Evelyn to spend quality time with his family, relaxing on the back porch and enjoying the peaceful lake by his sister and brother-in-law's house. Family survivors include his sisters Evelyn Morosko (Stephen), Phyllis Bailey (Larry), Margaret Lamberson (Tim), and brothers Eldon Pfenninger, and Walter Pfenninger ( Mary). In addition there are 14 nieces and nephews and 32 great-nieces and nephews. He will especially be missed by his loyal, loving fur baby Pumpkin. Father Nello was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Maria Barachini, sister, Olga Ditzel, Henry and Peggy Pfenninger and Irving, Jason and Linda Pfenninger.
Friends may call on Friday, May 27, 2022 at St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave., Shelton from 4;00-7:00 p.m., followed by the Parish Mass at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday May 28, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence Church. Interment will be private and take place in New York. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Father Nello's memory may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, woundedwarriorproject.org or Friends of the Shelton Animal Shelter Inc. P.O. The family wishes to extend its appreciation to all the employees of Benchmark at Splitrock in Shelton for their care, kindness and compassion to Father Nello during his residence there.
