Neri Teresa Marcano

Neri Teresa Marcano, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, surrounded by the family she so deeply loved. She was born on May 26, 1942, in Ranchuelo, Province of Las Villas, Cuba, to Mario Marcelino Valencia and Dulce Maria Sotolongo, both deceased.

Neri came to the United States in 1962, carrying with her the courage, faith, and determination that would define her life. In 1963, she met the love of her life, José Antonio Marcano, and the two were married soon thereafter on July 4, 1964. Together, they shared 61 years of unwavering devotion, a partnership built on love, resilience, and a shared commitment to family and faith.

Neri faced profound challenges in her journey to motherhood, enduring the heartbreak of five pregnancy losses. With strength and grace, she went on to welcome her two beloved children, Maria Teresa Marcano Joyner (James and children) and Mario Antonio Marcano (Maria), who will forever carry her guidance, tenderness, and quiet wisdom in their hearts.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Eliana Diaz (Christian), Giovanni DePaula (Alba), Dalila DePaula, Matthew Marcano, Gabriela Reyes, and her great-grandchildren (Nathian, Noah, Josef, Cali & Kamyron), each of whom brought her immeasurable joy and pride. Neri was preceded in death by her younger brother, Mario Valencia, who passed away in 2021.

A woman of profound and steadfast faith, Neri was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and later St. Michael's Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her ministry was rooted in music, a gift she shared generously as the Director of the Hispanic Choir, where she also played the organ for many years. Through her leadership, she united voices, lifted spirits, and filled the sanctuary with the beauty of worship. Her influence extended far beyond the choir loft-touching youth, families, and countless parishioners who found comfort, inspiration, and belonging through her presence.

Neri also leaves behind a wide circle of loved ones who were family not only by blood but by heart: her sisters from another mother, her devoted sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, her beloved goddaughters and godsons, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. Each of them held a special place in her life, and each carries memories of her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love.

Neri will be remembered for her gentle, strong Cuban spirit, her deep compassion, and the way she made every person feel welcome and valued. Her home was a place of warmth and comfort; her faith, a guiding light; her love, a blessing that will endure for generations.

Her family takes solace in knowing she is now at peace, embraced by God's eternal light and reunited with the loved ones who went before her. Nació el 26 de mayo de 1942 en Ranchuelo, Provincia de Las Villas, Cuba, hija de Mario Marcelino Valencia y Dulce María Sotolongo, ambos fallecidos.

Neri llegó a los Estados Unidos en 1962, llevando consigo el valor, la fe y la determinación que definirían su vida.
