Nicholas Evanchik Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Melby Funeral Home & Crematory on Feb. 6, 2026.
Nicholas "Nick" C. Evanchik, 78, of Platteville, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Known to many simply as "Nick," he was born on March 11, 1947, in DuQuoin, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Marye (Starasta) Evanchik.

Nick proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS William V. Pratt as a Hospital Corpsman. During his service from 1964-70, he earned the lifelong nickname "Doc" from his shipmates-a name that reflected both his role and the care he showed others. Nick married Jean Sirek and had five children whom he cherished unconditionally.

Nick attended Rend Lake Community College and later the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, where he earned a degree in Safety/OSHA. He spent many years as a union carpenter, working on projects across the country. He especially cherished his time in California, where he helped build notable places such as Disney and the Ritz-Carlton. Later in his career, Nick transitioned into safety leadership, serving as the Safety Director at Dubuque Brewing Company.

Nick had a deep love for music, especially the blues, and was rarely idle-always tinkering, building, or working on projects around the house. He had a passion for genealogy and took great pride in researching and preserving his family's history for his children. For many years, he dedicated his time as a Boy Scout leader, sharing his skills, guidance, and steady presence with countless young people. When he was well enough to, he loved camping, fishing, and being outdoors. He had a passion for classic cars. Above all else, Nick truly loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Nick is survived by his children, Joe (Kelsey), Julie, Jackie, and Stephanie Evanchik; and his grandchildren, Joshua and Elise. He was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas "JR" Evanchik; his parents; and his brother, Stephen.

A special thank you to his hospice team, Kelly (RN), Marie (SW), and LaShaunda (CNA); as well as Camaron Schenck & family for their time, dedication, and care in Nick's last months on earth.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Pastor Mary Ann Floerke will officiate. Chapel Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274, Platteville. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Nicholas Evanchik Memorial fund. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com.
