Nick and I served together as young firefighters in the Bronx from 1969 through 1974. He was a well-regarded firefighter and an all-around good guy. I am proud to call him a friend. He fit right into our kitchen which was a hotbed of union discussions. He had the ability to ignite any union issue, winning over opposing points of view. He served the UFA with distinction. He will be missed by all.

Nick and I lived in Throgg's Neck and attended the Police Academy together in Feb. 1968. We would take the bus on Tremont Ave, down to Westchester Square and then the subway to the Police academy. Our Class (about 40 guy's ) were mostly 21, 22 & 23 year old guy's. Nick was about 29 years old in the academy, so we considered him our " elder statesman ", so to speak ! I remember Nick handing out cigars in the locker room - which said - "it's a boy " Nick, Tom Guldner & I were the 3 guy's ( traiders ) who went over to the FDNY I worked in Ladder 17, in the South Bronx, when Nick was elected as the Bronx Trustee in the Fire Fighters union. He was a great representative for all the firemen in the Bronx - so much so - that he was later elected as the President of UFA and was widely considered as one of the most powerful Union Leaders in NY City RIP Nick Denis O'Connor Ret. Lieut. FDNY

We so enjoyed getting to know Nick and Eleanor when we moved in next door to them. Their door was always open and the stories of `the old days´ were never lost and so enjoyed as we were also from NYC w/ties to both NYPD and NYFD. We shared many nice meals and a lot of laughs. Heartbroken to hear of his passing but we know He is in a better place now. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with Eleanor, Nicky, Louis and their families at this sad time.
Love,
Ann & Eileen McGovern

Nick and I served with the NYPD back in 1968-1970 and then we both transferred to the FDNY. Nick was a good friend and a great union leader. He always put the needs of his members before his own. Nick will be missed by all who knew him. Tom Guldner
