Nick Mongillo, my friend for nearly 30 years was, to those who did not know him, an overly serious man. In truth, he was a very private man, but those of us fortunate enough to earn his respect and friendship saw him as he really was; a man lovingly proud of his wife, his heritage, family and friends. He was exacting and precise in his profession, a leader and teacher, a conservative and patriot.
Nick loved his wife Barbara, his son and daughters, and their children. He was very proud of his parents and his heritage. He spoke of a special fondness for his siblings, especially his deceased brother Buddy, and his brother Robert. He was also a patriot whose love for country, its Constitution, for conservative values and the men and women in uniform was, well above the average man's.
Nick was faithful, honest and forthright; one always knew where they stood with Nick. On the job (atSikorsky Aircraft) he was an exacting taskmaster, a leader of a team of expert tool makers, and a gifted teacher. He was one of the very few who could think and envision concepts in 3 dimensional space. He would not suffer idiots, incompetents, cheats or liars.
While Nick was not an overly sentimental man and, rarely showed emotion to those he did not know well, he nevertheless was deeply moved by the misery of friends, family and those in the military. He was not one to complain about his health, but was concerned about the health of those he held close. In fact the topic of health or general conversation was seldom about him, it was about everyone else. He kept his own illness private, I think, to spare friends the pain.
Nick was quick to smile and had a goofy kind of laugh that was infectious. When he laughed one couldn't help but laugh along. He loved holding court at the local Chinese all-you-can-eat buffets, surrounded by friends, talking about sports, investments, and our plans for life after Sikorsky. Nick was my friend and I will miss him.
