With family at his side, Nick, age 99, passed away on July 12, 2025, at Fair Oaks Lodge, Wadena, MN, with care provided by the staff and HIA (formerly Hospice of the Red River Valley).
Nicholas Jr. was born to Nicholas Sr. and Lucille (Reiger) Schmitz on April 18, 1926, in Wadena, MN. He attended country school before graduating from the eighth grade at St. Ann's Parochial School in 1939. He then devoted his life to tending the soil and animal husbandry.
On June 12, 1951, Nick married Patricia Ann Endres at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bluffton. They made their home east of Wadena and raised a family of seven children.
A hardworking crop and Grade A dairy farmer, Nick was adventurous in test planting early crop seed/plants and was a representative for the Mycogen Seed corn company. He was also involved with the MN Irrigation Association, Farm Bureau, and Central MN Feeders. Locally, he served as a County Commissioner, was a member of the England Prairie Pioneer Club, and St. Joseph Society. With an eye for antique tractors, before long his collection numbered 27! Not everything was work Nick and Pat wore out a few rugs as members of the local Square Dance Club and also enjoyed ballroom dances.
Preceding Nick in death were his parents, and brothers, Leo and Albert Schmitz; parents-in-law, Alphonse and Serena Endres.
Forever remembering Nick will be his devoted wife of 74 years, Patricia; children: Mark (Barb) Schmitz of Caledonia, WI, Ann Martodam of Waite Park, Kenneth Schmitz of Osakis, Dianne McMullen of Brainerd, Linda (Jerry Jr.) Wozniak of Little Falls, Lucy (Luke) Christiansen of Brainerd, Jean (Charles) Gammon of Clear Lake; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; siblings: Gertrude Roggenkamp and Tony (Eva) Schmitz; sister-in-law, Minerva Schmitz; along with a host of extended family, neighbors and friends.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Schmitz, Albert Schmitz and Greg Martodam. Serving as pallbearers will be Christopher Schmitz, Brian Martodam, David Schmitz, Steven McMullen, Ryan Wozniak, Dilan Christiansen and Kreston Gammon.
