Nicholas H. Sofios, 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Monday May 22, 2023. He was born on December 14, 1935 in Bowling Green, Ohio to Harry and Helen (Tamvakis) Sofios. He was the fourth of five children in a family which traced their roots to the Island of Kythera Greece. He was the beloved husband of Virginia (Acklin) Sofios, the cherished father of Gregory (wife Melissa) and Stephanie Kirwan (husband Jon) and the adoring grandfather of Nicolette Kirwan.
Nick received Bachelor and Master's degrees at Bowling Green State University. He received his Ph.D at Washington State University and taught there and at the University of Connecticut before moving to Providence. He was a Professor of Sociology at Providence College for three decades. He maintained life long interests in his academic specializations, Political Sociology, Social Movements, Environmental Sociology and History of Social Thought. His life was dedicated to learning and education, truth, peace and social justice.
He had diverse leisure interests and passions: literature, music, biking, running, winemaking and time spent with family. He was devoted to his brothers and family, traveling with them over the years, and returning to Kythera to maintain the family homestead and olive trees. He was a joyful follower of sports, especially teams of his alma maters and New England. He nurtured friendships with mentors, students, friends and distant relatives. Nick is survived by his wife, children, and brother Charles Sofios of Canton Michigan. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers Ted and John of California. He loved and was loved and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, dear husband, father, grandfather, teacher, friend.
