He was raised on the farm, graduated from Mott High School in 1960, and shortly thereafter joined the Navy where he served until 1964.

In 1968 he graduated from NDSSS in Wahpeton, ND with his degree as a certified welder. He worked for Welk Steel in Mandan, Nicks Plumbing and Heating, and then was hired by Kolling Construction as their first welder. He helped with welding for both the Woolworth Store and Ponderosa Liquors.

In 1971, he moved back to the family farm and was proud to say that he now sleeps in the same room he was born in.

He married Loretta Jahner in June of 1966, and they had 4 children together. They retired in 2008 and moved to Dickinson.

Nick was a member of the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus, a member of 40 and 8, and the Moose Club of Dickinson.

Nick enjoyed reading, watching Old Western movies and playing an occasional card game.
