I am heartbroken to announce the death of my brother, Nick Tran. His childhood friends know him as Nhan. He passed away unexpectedly at the age of 51. Nhan left us on Saturday, September 30th, 2023 in the comfort of his home in New Jersey.
Nhan had many endearing qualities. He was a kind and giving person. He always put other people's needs before his. Always found time to help people out and made sure that his family was taken care of. He was always there for his family and friends when called upon. When we were little boys of five and six we were stranded in a small fishing boat in the middle of the Pacific for days with only a daily ration of a small medicine bottle-cap of water to keep us alive. He shared his water with me to keep me from drinking the sea water. Even at a very young age he was generous and caring.
Nhan was staunchly loyal to his friends and family. He was agreeable, rarely got upset, and quick to forgive. Nhan loved his wife's cooking and preferred her home cooked meals over dining out. He was a huge movie buff, loved his PlayStation and could be found enjoying his evenings with his dogs and family at home.
Nhan was a connector. He was good at bringing people together. He genuinely enjoyed people and people enjoyed being around him. He had lived up to his given name, Trong Nhan meaning "respect for humanity". When we were in middle-school and high-school our house was always buzzing with laughter. Nhan would invite friends over to hang out everyday after school. Some of his childhood friends remained his friends to this day from over 35 years ago. Everywhere he went he made friends. Nhan was very well loved in the community. He was a brother, a friend, a role model, a mentor to many.
Nhan was a beloved son and brother. We were inseparable growing up. For many years it was just the three of us until my mom remarried and had our little brother, Jimmy. At a tender age of three, Nhan had to watch over me, his sickly but rambunctious little brother while our mom was at work. One summer when we were eight and nine we walked to the community pool everyday. One day a German Shepherd much larger than us jumped a fence and bit me. Nhan chased the dog away. That same summer we almost burned down the kitchen making breakfast when the frying-pan was engulfed in fire. He put the fire out. Until we were grown and moved away for school and work, everywhere he went he had his little brother in tow. He always made sure that I was included.
"Nick was someone who was well known and loved in our community. Everyone who has met him, always felt a strong bond and thought of him as a brother and good friend for life. He was also one of the original team members of Pinky's Nail Salon and can be considered a part of its heart and foundation; and an integral aspect of its growth. I know many people have met him when they sat at his table getting their nails done. Through this he has built his own loyal base of clients who have been with him through the years and I know will miss him greatly. His clients were the best, they would bring him lunch and coffee and would not even mind to drive over an hour just to get their nails done by him. This speaks volume of the professionalism and craft of his trade."
Nhan is predeceased by his mother, Huynh Thi Mai. He is survived by his wife Lee and his 3 children, Nicole, Peter, and Linda; his brother Tran Minh Tri, sister in-law Bui Thu Uyen, and nephew Tran-Bui Minh Kien; his youngest brother Jimmy Nguyen, sister in-law Vangie Nguyen, and niece MaiElise Nguyen; and last but not least his furry daughter Hime Tran.
