Nita Hickman Obituary
Nita was born in LaPorte on June 12, 1945, the daughter of Earl and Esther (Atkinson) Thurston. Nita graduated from Remington High School with the Class of 1963. She married the love of her life, Ronald Lee Hickman on Nov. 22, 1964, in Remington, and he preceded her in death on July 11, 2016.
Nita worked as a license branch clerk for the Indiana BMV at the Rensselaer location. She also co-owned Hickman's Ice Cream Parlor for seven years. Nita was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and participated in the quilt ministry there. She was a charter member of Psi Iota Xi.
Nita enjoyed ceramics, painting, crocheting, and drawing. Sewing with her granddaughters gave her great joy and you could always spot her in the crowd at any of her children's and grandchildren's activities cheering them on to victory. Nita will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Nita is survived by her children, Daniel Lee (Alicia) Hickman, Carmel, Sherry Kay (Chris) Schmidt, Crown Point, Kenneth Riley (Jodi) Hickman, Rensselaer, Chad Alan (Leanne) Hickman, Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Nita was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Esther; husband, Ronald; and brother, Thomas Thurston.
Friends may call upon the family at Jackson Funeral Chapel in Rensselaer on Sunday, Sept. 24 from 2 – 6 p.m. CT. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, Sept. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church of Rensselaer with Pastor Andy Martin officiating.
Interment will follow at Weston Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church and/or the Alzheimer's Association.
