Norma Jacqueline Altom, affectionately known as "Jackie" passed away peacefully on Thursday August 28, 2025, at the age of 87, in Kalamazoo Michigan. Born on March 29, 1938, in Gilbert, West Virginia, to Ermon and Ada Hatfield.
Jackie shared a childhood filled with laughter and camaraderie alongside her four brothers- Larry, Ward, Dane, and Neil-and her three sisters, Nadine, Judy, and Billie. These formative years instilled in her a deep appreciation for family bonds. Jackie moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan at the age of 16. In 1955 she married John Altom, together, they raised four children.
Jackie worked as an executive secretary for attorney Richard Walsh for over 20 years. She developed strong bonds with coworkers who became cherished lifelong friends. She deeply treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and siblings. Jackie had a passion for gardening, bowling, and reading-simple pleasures that brought her happiness throughout her life.
Jackie is preceded in death by her ex- husband, John Altom; her parents, Ermon and Ada Hatfield; her siblings Larry, Ward, Dane, Billie, Nadine, and Neil; and her grandchildren Todd Garmire, Joshua Hemry, Christopher Altom, and Kylie Altom.
Jackie is survived by her loving sister, Judy, and her children: Renee (Steven) Garmire, Rachelle (Buz) Hemry, Rod (Karen) Altom, and Rhonda (Steve) Zeluff. Grandchildren: Stephanie Butler, Jarrod Hemry, Casey Lower, Krista Gebhard, Amber Cupples, Ryan Altom, Brandon Zeluff, and Nathan Zeluff. She is also lovingly remembered by several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The family extended heartfelt thanks to Kairos Dwelling for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kairos Dwelling in Jackie's memory. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
