Norma Jean Horton died peacefully in hospice care at the Durham VA on Saturday, December 6, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. She was born in Durham on March 4, 1941.

Norma grew up in downtown Durham and graduated from Durham High School, Class of 1960. Shortly after graduation, she enlisted in the Army on June 29, 1960, and proudly served her country as an Army sharpshooter during the Vietnam era. Norma was honorably discharged while in service at Fort Ritchie, MD on September 8, 1961.

Norma spent her entire life in the place she loved most, in the Parkwood Community, creating a home that was a haven for family, friends, and anyone lucky enough to cross her path. She had a fearless presence that carried into the way she led her family. Her strength was quiet but unwavering. She loved to dance, cook, and most of all she loved to make people feel welcome. Norma had a beautiful heart and soul. She was always eager to lend a helping hand. She greeted neighbors, friends, and strangers with the same warmth. That simple kindness was her way of loving the world. Norma adored her dogs, Roadie and Lucy, treasured family dinners, and found joy in the laughter of her friends at the local McDonalds.

Norma’s beloved son, Rex Brust, preceded her passing in 2023 and is survived by his sons Collin Brust and Cody Brust. She is survived by her daughter, Angela Dadlani (spouse Dileep Dadlani and sons Aidan McDonald and Trevor McDonald); sister Carol McGhee; niece Tori Jones (Audrey and Natalie Jones); and nephew Patrick McGhee (spouse Heather, son Connor, and daughter Piper). Their lives are richer for her stories, her stubborn spirit, and her generous heart.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Durham VA for the care and resources that made a difficult journey more bearable.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 20th, 2025, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, in Durham, NC. All are welcome to gather and share memories beginning at 2:00 pm, with Celebration of Life at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina or Saving Grace Animal Shelter in Raleigh, NC.
