Norma Jane Milligan, a beloved daughter, sister, friend, teacher, leader and missionary, passed away on August 22, 2024 at the age of 61. Norma was a woman of deep faith, boundless love, and a heart that touched countless lives. Born April 1st, 1963 to parents Jim Milligan from Colorado and Celia Saavedra Milligan from New Mexico, she was one of seven siblings-five sisters and two brothers-Diane, Yvonne, Virginia, Jeanette, Norma, Joey, and Jimmy. She is remembered with gratitude and joy for the ways she enriched our lives.
Norma lived a life of strength, generosity and service, guided by her unwavering faith in God. Norma found fulfillment in serving the Lord and her community. She was deeply involved in her church, served in the children's ministry, as a praise and worship leader and volunteered in the community. Norma also embarked on missionary trips to Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico. Exemplifying the love of Christ, Norma was always ready to serve, fill the gap and step in when there was need. Closer to home, she organized and participated in community and outreach, events sharing her love and light with everyone she met.
Norma was also a gifted artist and brought joy and creativity to her neighborhood. As a child, she would organize community plays, recruiting fellow neighborhood kids with promises of candy. Turning summers into magical performances for family, friends and the community. Her love for the arts was just one of the many ways she expressed her vibrant personality and zest for life. Since her youth, Norma's creative spirit was always at work, bringing people together and creating lasting memories.
Education was a cornerstone of Norma's life. She attended Ford Boulevard Elementary, David W. Griffith Junior High, Garfield High School and East Los Angeles College. Before pursuing higher education at Cal State Los Angeles, where she earned her bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Special Education. She was a dedicated educator, serving for 30 years as a Special Education Teacher, within the Los Angeles Unified School District. She also served as a master teacher, mentoring new educators in the field. Norma dedicated her career to supporting families in discovering the strengths of their children and helping her students realize their fullest potential. Norma had a gift for teaching and a special aptitude with children that went beyond the classroom.
Though she never had children of her own, for many years Norma's heart and passion was in serving the youth. When she wasn't educating young minds, she used her talents to bless Children's Ministries. She organized countless children's choirs and directed many Christmas and Easter plays. She brought Vacation Bible School to life, at numerous churches, creating a space where young children and adolescents can learn about God's love in a fun and engaging way. Norma excelled in whatever she did and would give the best of herself to produce the best. She had an exceptional way of converting what was ordinary into something spectacular and extraordinary.
Even as she faced her own health challenges, Norma remained steadfast in her mission to serve others. Known as a silent prayer warrior, she was always interceding for her family, friends, acquaintances, strangers and loved ones. She used her time during dialysis treatment to call, minister and pray for others. Demonstrating her unyielding commitment to uplifting those around her. She was never idle, even as her strength was fading, she did not allow illness or challenges to deter her from her mission. Norma always had a project, a plan or a person in her heart, whom she felt called to encourage. Norma had a special gift for encouragement; that the Lord gave her. She just seemed to know who and when to call and would quietly offer emotional, spiritual and concrete support in times of need. Her joy and love was contagious, and would shine through her words, actions, deeds and presence.
Above all, Norma found completeness, in her relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her greatest joy and most treasured accomplishment was her service to God. In Him, Norma found her ultimate purpose. Her life was a testament to the love and grace of God, and she demonstrated that love freely towards others. She lived every day with purpose, pouring her heart into her ministry, her family, her friends, and those around her.
Norma will be remembered for exemplifying the love of God, being a pillar of strength for family and community and for the indelible impact she has made on others. We celebrate Norma's legacy-a life lived fully and faithfully. She is survived by her living siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, fellow church members and a multitude of friends and loved ones. Though we mourn her passing, we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace with the Lord she served so passionately. We will carry her spirit with us, cherishing the memories and the lessons she imparted. Norma's light will continue to shine and echo in the hearts of those she touched.
Rest in peace, dear Norma Jane Milligan. She was a blessing to us all, and her legacy of love and faith will endure forever.
