Norma Louise Westphal was born on October 19, 1923, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the only child of George Westphal and Elizabeth Reed Westphal. Norma graduated from high school in Lincoln and also attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for 2 years. She served as a civilian secretary in the U.S. Navy during World War II; after the war, she transferred to Hawaii, where she met and married Captain Robert Hamilton Mitchell, U.S. Marine Corps, on April 20, 1947.
The couple returned to the United States and lived in Virginia, California, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Virginia again. Bob Mitchell retired from the Marines in 1963 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and the family relocated to Greenville, Texas, where Bob took a position with LTV Electrosystems (later E-Systems). Subsequently, Norma and Bob moved to Dallas, Texas; then to Huntington, Indiana; then to Parker, Texas; and finally back to Greenville.
Bob Mitchell passed away in 2003, but Norma remained in Greenville till 2015, when she entered an assisted living facility in Fort Worth, Texas. She remained in elder care until the time of her death.
Norma was predeceased by both her mother and father, her husband, and an infant son, Robert Mitchell Jr. She is survived by her elder son, Steven George Mitchell; Steven's wife, Anita McMahan Mitchell; and their son, Alan Reed Mitchell, all of Benbrook, Texas. She is also survived by her younger son, Richard Reed Mitchell, of Dallas, Texas.
Norma was a member of both Grace Presbyterian Church and First United Presbyterian Church in Greenville. She was active in support of the Salvation Army the United Way, and the YMCA both in Greenville and in Huntington, Indiana. She enjoyed reading and music, playing bridge and mahjong, and participating in family gatherings. She traveled extensively with Bob, including visits to Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. She led a long and active life, although her last decade of life was marked by continuing health issues.
