Norma Angelique BlackMoon, 88, of Red Scaffold, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on January 23, 1938, Norma lived a life of resilience shaped by her strong Lakota values. Kindness, humor, compassion, and generosity were just a few of the qualities that touched those around her. Those who knew her will remember her quiet strength and the warmth she shared so freely with others.
In her earlier years, Norma lived in Eagle Butte, where she worked as a teacher at Head Start and held various other jobs that she took great pride in. She believed deeply in the importance of education and in always continuing to grow. That belief led her to attend Black Hills State University, where she earned her degree in Social Services, an accomplishment she was incredibly proud of. She carried that passion for learning and helping others with her throughout her life.
After moving to Oregon, Norma began working as a Homeliving Assistant at Chemawa Indian School. She dedicated more than 25 years of service there before retiring, touching countless lives with her patience, care, and steady presence. Many students and coworkers remember the quiet way she supported and encouraged those around her.
Norma had a gentle spirit and a gift for making people feel comfortable and welcome. She had a way of counseling others simply by listening, offering understanding rather than judgment.
She loved to write, draw, and create beautiful beadwork. She loved going on day trips to the Oregon coast with her family. She also loved the thrill of thrift shopping and finding a good deal. But more than anything, Norma treasured the time she spent with her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were among the greatest joys of her life, and she carried deep love and pride for each of them.
She is survived by her daughters Teri Lynn (Leah and Natasha), Dixie (Brad, Jeslyn, Brayden, and Brycen), Lanell (McKayla, McKenzie, and Micah), and Jonni (JoRae, LaRissa, Mark, Maegan, Linus, Yamni, and Gina), who will forever cherish the memories they shared with her and the love she gave so freely.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert Percy BlackMoon and Lena Magdalene BlackMoon, as well as her siblings Thomas, Leah, Eddie, Gabe, Norvan, and David.
Friends and family are invited to attend and celebrate a life that meant so much to so many.
