Norma J. Morton, age 96, of
Charleston, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Willow Breeze Hospice House in
Mattoon, IL, with her son and daughter by her side.
She was born on July 8, 1929, in
Vandalia, IL, to Lou and Maggie (Warner) Williams. On October 8, 1949, she married the love of her life, William "Bill" Morton, in Vandalia. They shared 67 wonderful years of marriage before his passing on November 27, 2016.
Norma is survived by her son, Johnny Bill Morton and his wife, Donna, of
Charleston, IL; her daughter, Janey Lou Morton of Indianapolis, IN; her grandson, Jonathan Morton and his wife, Julianne, of Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Robert "Jack" and Anna Mae Morton of Chicago, IL; her brother, Eddie Williams and his wife, Karen, of Louisville, IL; her sister, Carol Wright and her husband, Ray, of Columbus, OH; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bill; her brother, Fredie Williams; and her sister-in-law, Judy Williams.
Norma was a devoted wife of 67 years and a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, great-great-aunt, and friend to all who knew her. She cherished her family deeply and found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved.
Norma spent many years in Vandalia, where she embraced life as a dedicated farm wife and homemaker. She worked faithfully alongside her husband on the farm, driving trucks, tending animals, gardening, and preserving the harvest through canning.
Later, she and Bill moved to Brookstone Estates in Mattoon to be closer to their children. Following Bill's passing, Norma spent the last ten years in Charleston at Brookstone Estates and the Villas of Holly Brook, where she formed many cherished friendships.
She was a former member of Haley Chapel Church in rural Vandalia and was a founding member of the Piece Makers Quilting Group, where she gathered weekly with friends to quilt. Quilting was her greatest passion. She had a remarkable eye for color and a special gift for turning simple patterns into beautiful works of art. In addition to quilting, she enjoyed knitting, embroidery, cross stitch, gardening, and always keeping her hands busy. Over the years, she held several positions outside the home, concluding her working career as a secretary for an insurance company.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive,
Charleston, IL. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bradley Shumaker officiating. Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Morton Cemetery in rural
Vandalia, IL.
