Norma Jean Newton Smith, age 89, of Springfield, KY passed away at 9:29 a.m., Monday, December 8, 2025 at the Flaget Hospital in Bardstown.

A native of Washington County, she was born on June 28, 1936 to the late Joseph Earl and Ann Elizabeth Filiatreau Newton.

She was a member of the St. Dominic Catholic Church, a 1954 graduate of Fredericktown High School and a homemaker.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Francis Borgia Smith, Jr. on December 25, 2015; a grandson, Brandon Michael Hupman on June 22, 1995 and four sisters, Margaret Ann Carey on Nov. 30, 1968, Mary Virginia Norsworthy on Nov. 19, 1986, Mary Velma Newton on Nov. 9, 2004 and Frances Jeanette Reed on Dec. 14, 2014.

Survivors include four daughters, Sandy (David) Peterson of Loretto, Lisa (Mark) Nally of Springfield, Kim (George) Hupman of Loretto and Lori (Rex) Graham of Lexington; four sons, Steve (Donna) Smith of Bardstown, Gary (Jean) Smith of Goshen, Rick (Brenda) Smith of Liberty and Todd (Tona) Smith of Springfield; twenty-one grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 11th at the St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Culpepper Elliott, officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Rose Cemetery.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Clarissa Smith, Madeline Peterson, Rebecca Laurel Peterson-Baheti, Erin Hupman, Natalie Sajko, Hannah Smith, Kaitlyn Smith and Julianne Graham.

Serving as casket bearers will be her grandsons, Ryan Smith, Ashley Nally, Eric Nally, Ethan Nally, Brent Hupman, Corey Hupman, Nathaniel Smith, Hunter Smith, Nick Smith, Jared Smith and Brennan Graham.

Visitation will be after 9:30 Thursday morning at the St. Dominic Catholic Church.

Carey & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
