Norma Jean "Sovine" Wells, 86, of Ansted, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Russellville, WV, Norma Jean was the daughter of the late Bud and Edith Sovine. She was also preceded in death by her beloved brother, Billy Bruce Sovine of Nallen, WV.
A proud honor graduate of Nuttall High School, she was a cheerleader and was chosen as Miss Nuttall in 1955. After high school, Jean began her career with C&P Telephone in Charleston, WV. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Wells of Ansted. Together, they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage and built a life grounded in faith, love, and service.
Jean was a loving sister to her brother, Larry Sovine, and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Ford and Nancy
Sovine. She was the cherished mother of Robert Allan Wells (Carol) of Mapletown, PA, and Cindy Wells Shamblin (Scott) of Sissonville, WV. She was the proud grandmother of Shawna Rudman (Frank) of Morgantown, WV; Tyler Shamblin (Taylor) of Scott Depot, WV; Trevor Shamblin (Kesha) of Sissonville, WV; and Adam Wells of Phoenix, AZ. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Patrick, Isaac, Eastyn, Greyson, Nash, Andi, and Banks, as well as several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She raised her children in a Christian home and lived by the principle that actions speak louder than words. Her life was a testament to quiet strength, humility, and unwavering faith. A longtime member of Lovers Leap Baptist Church, "Miss Jean" was known throughout the Ansted community for her servant's heart. From organizing the church's Widow's Christmas Dinner to volunteering at the local ministry center, she served faithfully and selflessly. There are just so many ways she served-always giving of herself with a heart full of love and faith. She was a second mother to many, offering guidance, prayer, and unconditional love as if they were her own. Her presence was gentle but powerful, and her impact will be felt for generations.
If you met her, you knew her heart. And if you knew her, you were blessed.
The family extends their deepest thanks to Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their compassionate care and kindness during this difficult time. You were each truly a blessing from God. The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who stood by us during Jean's final days. Your love, prayers, meals, visits, errands, and countless acts of kindness carried us through a time that was both sacred and difficult. Whether you swept a floor, brought a warm dish, ran an errand, or simply sat beside us, your presence was a gift. We will never forget the care you showed, and we are deeply, deeply grateful.
Visitation will be held at Lovers Leap Baptist Church on Saturday, August 2, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 3, at 2:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802-1472, in Jean's memory.
