Norma Spencer

BENNINGTON-
Norma May Spencer, of Bennington, sadly left us peacefully on December 26 th, 2023 after a long battle with emphysema and COPD. She was born on January 7 th, 1952 in Bennington, VT.
She had several jobs over her lifetime, including Grand Union, Bennington Potters and Eveready Battery. After working for Eveready Battery for almost 20 years, she had to retire early due to her illness.
After receiving her diagnosis, she championed her family and friends to quit smoking so none of us would have to go through the suffering she has gone through.
Many know that Norma loved to quilt. She has made hundreds of quilts and quillows (a quilt that folds into a pillow) for her children and grandchildren. This, of course, doesn't count the numerous quilts and quillows made for friends and for raffles to benefit her lifelong church, The White Chapel Society on Chapel Road, Bennington. Perhaps most admirably, she continued her giving nature even while on Hospice by donating some of her fabric to have pieces made for preemie babies in various hospitals, one of the many reasons people loved her.
Prior to her death, she had been receiving hospice services through the Visiting Nursing Association, Hospice Services of Bennington. She so appreciated all they did for her. She (and her entire family) gives special thanks to her nurse Monica, her nurses's aids, Valerie, Meghan and especially Sue, whom she enjoyed the help she provided and her company. She most adored the time she received from her hospice volunteers, Margaret and Nancy.
She is survived by her Caregivers, daughter Jennifer Johnson and her son-in-law Gary Johnson. Her favorite daughter, Rachael Moore and her only son and baby of the family, Richard Spencer. Her grandchildren, Derek Hurley Jr., Michael Hurley and Jack Hurley. Her sister Mary Spencer and brother John Spencer. She is also survived by her estranged daughter, Linda Sherman and granddaughter Jamie Sherman, whom she had little to no contact with for the last several years. She was predeceased by her parents, Herman Spalding Spencer and Lucille Pilling Spencer.
Per the wishes of Norma, there will be no services. If friends or family wish to make contributions in Norma's memory, they can be made directly to the Second Chance AnimalShelter, 1779 VT RTE 7A, Arlington, VT 05250.
