Norman Cunningham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Patterson Cremation and Funeral Service - Jacksonville on Jul. 5, 2022.
Norman Wayne Cunningham, Sr. was born on October 20, 1942 to the late Louis and
Moselle Cunningham in Moultrie, Georgia.
Norman graduated high school in Albany, New York and attended college at Florida
Memorial University. He later lived in Detroit, Michigan where he worked at the Ford
Motor Plant. After moving to Jacksonville, he worked as a Cook for the Jumbo Shrimp
Ball Park and later retired as a Cook at the Jacksonville Jaguar Stadium.
Norman a.k.a. Big Poppa a.k.a. Grandpa Popeye a.k.a. Spike Lee's Twin Brother had a
heart of gold and never met a stranger. He had an overall love for music, but his passion
was Jazz. Norman loved to sing, dance, dress and always had a good joke for you. He
made everyone smile and laugh, but more importantly, he made everyone feel good and
full of joy.
Norman was an active member of Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church where he served
on the Usher Board, the Men's Chorus, and the Mass Choir. He spent his past time at
Family Gatherings and was a Founding Member of the Heritage Gathering Reunion Amen
Brothers. Norman will ALWAYS be remembered for shouting out his favorite slogan "I
Love It When You Call Me Big Poppa!"
Norman received his heavenly wings on June 26, 2022.
He leaves to cherish his memory his dedicated & loving wife, Alma Cunningham; sisters, Brenda Jackson (Green) and
Sharon Martin (Percy); brother, Thomas "Dewey" Jones Jr. who preceded him in death;
daughters, Celeste Carrington and Carmen Cunningham; sons, Norman Cunningham
(Lisa) and Ramon Cunningham; bonus sons, Glenn Cummings (Antoinette) and Ernest
Cummings who preceded him in death; grandchildren, Shaki', Ramel, Imani, Dante,
Dominique, Ramon II, Myuir, Xyuir, Larry, A'leena, TTne' and Justice; a very special

I had the pleasure of working as a security officer at the resident where Norman resided back in 2010 and when I tell you Norman made the nights go by so smooth with his sense of humor and laughs woo lol! He was a joy to be around and I definitely enjoyed his stories about people mistaking him for Spike Lee. You sir will be greatly missed. Glad to have met you in this life time. I´m sure our Heavenly Father is pleased to have you as well. My deepest condolences to the family for lossing this angel especially Ms. Alma. RIP Norman!
