Norman Hinz, 86 of Algona, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024, at his home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. Burial will take place at Lu Verne Township Cemetery in Lu Verne. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 4:00-6:00 PM at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona. Norman Alvin Hinz was born on May 15, 1938 to Michael and Amanda (Schmidt) Hinz on a farm near Lu Verne, lowa. Norman was the youngest of 12 siblings. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Lu Verne. He attended grade, parochial and high school in Lu Verne and graduated in 1956. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served a four year term. After traveling around the states in the Navy, he then worked for Continental Telephone Company of Minnesota.
He married Sharon Quinn and was a proud father of their four children: Laurie, Greg, Dawn and Erin. He became a grandfather to nine and great grandfather to five.
In 1980, Norman returned to the family farm. In 1981 he married Sandra "Betsy" Feist and became a stepfather to Sandys' six daughters, grandfather to 10 and great-grandfather to 11. In 1983, Norm launched his own business known as Hinz Telephone Equipment Sales and Service. Farming and gardening were his passion. As a true farmer, he often assisted others in field prep, planting and harvesting. Whenever an opportunity arose, he passed his knowledge and love for farming to others. He took time to admire the beautiful nature and wildlife around him. He enjoyed seeing God's work in the harvest of grapes, pears, apples and numerous vegetables. Many hours were spent canning, freezing, making jelly with his wife, Betsy.
Other hobbies included bowling, fishing, dancing and listening to Elvis Presley.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Betsy; his children: Laurie (Carl) Putze of Mankato, MN and their daughters Amanda Putze, of Colorado Springs, CO; Ericá Putze of Hollywood, CA. Gregory (Tamara) Hinz of Humboldt, IA and their son Matthew (Hailey) Hinz of Coppell, TX. Dawn (Charlie) Deutz and their children Lyndsie (EJ) Adams of Sandy Springs, GA; Jordan (Brienna) Deutz of Marshall MN; Paige Deutz of Aspen, CO; Dereck Deutz of Marshall, MN; Dawsyn (Alyssa) Deutz of Marshall, MN. Erin Jensen of Marshall, MN and her son Jonah; and 5 great grandchildren.
His stepchildren: Tamara (Greg) Hinz of Humboldt, IA; Jacqualine (Duane) Hegna of Stafford, VA; Terri (Gary) Wolf of Pequot Lakes, MN; Trudy (Donald) Altman of Loves Park, IL; Tina (Jake) Jacobs of Urbandale, IA; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; His sister Lois Palsic of Osage, IA.
Norm was preceded in death by parents: Michael and Amanda Hinz; an infant brother; nine siblings; step grandson Jon Hegna and stepdaughter: Cyndi Feist.
