Marie Downs, born on April 28, 1951, unexpectedly passed away on October 7, 2023, at her residence. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Marie was known for her vibrant personality and the joy she brought to those around her.
Marie worked as a bartender at Martins Restaurant and Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi prior to her retirement. Her warmth and friendly nature made her a favorite among patrons. She took pride in her work and always went above and beyond to ensure everyone felt welcome.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Marie had a multitude of interests and hobbies. She possessed a creative spirit and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and playing marbles. Marie had a green thumb and found solace in plants and gardening. Her love for nature shined through as she cultivated beauty in her own backyard.
In addition to her passion for crafting and gardening, Marie was also a skilled cosmetologist and seamstress. She possessed the talent to effortlessly bring out the beauty in others through hair styling while also creating stunning garments with her seamstress skills. Marie's creativity extended into the kitchen as well. Cooking, baking, decorating cakes, and engaging in various arts and crafts were sources of great delight for her.
Family meant everything to Ola Marie Downs. She adored her loved ones and cherished spending time with them. Her vivacious spirit made her the life of every family gathering. Marie's "Heifer trips" with her sisters were always filled with laughter and cherished memories.
Marie's passing is mourned by many who knew her personally. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack (Jinks) Harrell and Louise Harrell, as well as her brother Freddie Chunn. She is survived by her loving husband Millard Downs; son Mitchell Tagert and his wife Sandy; daughters Katina White and Joey, and Chelsea Eubanks and James; grandchildren Mitchell Tagert, Heyleigh Dillon, Quin Allen, Brandie Clark, Brady White, and Ethan White; a host of great-grandchildren; siblings James Harrell and his wife Shirley, Linda Harrison, Jack Harrell and his wife Kala, Dale Harrell and his wife Brenda, Bonnie Bailey and her husband Tommy, and Pennie Boykin and her husband Jay; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Services to honor Ola Marie Downs will be held at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence, Mississippi. The visitation will take place on October 11th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A funeral service will follow at the same location from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. The interment will be held at Floral Hills Memorial Garden in Pearl, Mississippi.
Ola Marie Downs will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and creativity. May we remember her infectious laughter and zest for life as we celebrate the remarkable woman she was.
