Ola Hunter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stuart Mortuary, Inc. - Indianapolis on Oct. 18, 2023.
Obituary
Ola Mae Jerry Hunter, known to us as simply Mama and Big Mama gentle soul entered the world on the fifth day of November in 1934 in Karnack, Texas. She was born to the parentage of Sylvester Jerry and Annie Jenkins Jerry. She was the eldest of five children. This beacon of light fell asleep on the fourteenth day of October in 2023 at the tender age of eighty-eight years old. As she took her final breath in Indianapolis, Indiana, she left a legacy of love, selflessness, and generosity behind.
Growing up in Karnack, Texas she matriculated her way through the Independent school systems. As the eldest of five children, she was always loving and caring for her siblings. As a young adult seeking her way, Ola later moved to Fort Worth, Texas. It was there while working at Carswell Airforce Base, that she met and later married George W. Hunter. The two built a family and traveled the world. After George's retirement they settled in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Ola joined the workforce later in life, after rearing her children and building a loving home. Ola's selflessness extended to her professional life as well. Her immense capacity for empathy and compassion made her an invaluable presence for those she served.
Ola was, first and foremost, a nurturing matriarch, the gravitational center of her large family. Her family transcended beyond her own bloodline, as she was Big Mama to everyone. She was stern with her words, big with her love and a force to be reckoned with. Forever classy with true beauty inside and out. She spoke eloquently, dressed exquisitely, and always remained a lady.
Big Mama as everyone knew, didn't take no mess, she would correct your speech because "Ain't, isn't a word". Stop you from popping your gum, check your appearance (because I know you aren't going out the house like that!) You didn't park in front of her house or sit on the bed in your street clothes. She was always dropping nuggets into your life. She would always remind us. "Everyone is not your friend."
Ola had a love for the Lord that she passed on to her many generations. As evident with her life. GOD richly rewarded her for her faithfulness. She was blessed with more than HIS promise of three score and ten. With an added blessing to see and be a part of her fifth generation.
In remembering Ola Hunter, it's important to note that she wasn't just a woman made of loving, selfless, and generous acts. She was a living embodiment of these attributes-an example for us all to strive towards, a beacon of unwavering love. Her memory and legacy will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to have known her.
Ola was preceded in death by her father, Sylvester Jerry; mother, Annie Cooks; daughter, Sheila Davis; sister, Mertis Ivory; brothers, George, Jimmy, and James Jerry; stepbrother, Sylvester Jerry Jr.; great-granddaughter, Michelle Taylor; great-grandsons, William Vance and Christian Washington; and great-great-granddaughter, Serenity Vance.
Those left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her Sons, Samuel Jerry, and Winfred Jerry (Debra); daughters, Thelma, Regina, and Rachel Hunter and Sharon Hunter Matthews; granddaughters reared as her own, Renee Gattis-Wills and Beneatha Miller (Tony); stepsisters, Elizabeth, Hilda Jerry and Syliva Johnson; nineteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and twenty-four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Heaven surely gained an angel when Ola Mae Jerry Hunter received her crown. There is so much to be said for a life well lived. However, we could not possibly fit it all onto paper. So, we encourage you to hold onto the memories and continue to live a life that would honor her and the beautiful lessons she imparted in her lifetime.
