Olavi Hirvonen Obituary

Hirvonen, Olavi
ALBANY - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Olavi Hirvonen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Born on December 26, 1930, in Canada, Olavi's life was marked by resilience, adventure, and a profound love for family and nature.
At just six months old, he emigrated to Finland, where he was raised by his maternal grandparents on the island of Koivisto in southeastern Finland. His childhood was filled with fishing, skiing, and playing in the woods and along the beaches with his young aunts and uncles. The onset of 1939's Winter War and subsequent Continuation War forced his family to evacuate to mainland Finland, where Olavi later distinguished himself after the war as a marksman in the Finnish Army.
In 1950, Olavi immigrated to the United States, where he met his first wife, Hilja, in New York City. Drafted during the Korean War, Olavi was stationed in Alaska, where he used his skiing and winter survival skills to train officers. They welcomed two children: Esa, born in Alaska during Olavi's service in the U.S. Army, and Elisa, born shortly after their return to the Bronx.
The family later moved to Vermont, operating a local ski resort, where Olavi's dedication to skiing flourished. He trained rigorously and qualified for the 1960 U.S. Olympic team, competing in both the 50km and 15km Nordic events in Squaw Valley.
After moving to Westchester County, Olavi built homes as a carpenter and general contractor, eventually joined in that work by his son. Tragically, Esa was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1977, a loss that left an indelible mark on Olavi's heart.
In search of healing and a return to skiing, Olavi discovered a property in Benson, NY, which he transformed into Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center. For the next 36 years, he cultivated this nationally recognized cross-country ski center, where he met his second wife, Ann Macartney, and raised their daughter, Leila. The family remains closely connected to the community that has grown around the resort.
Olavi's passion for skiing was not just a career, but a cherished family tradition. He instilled a love for the outdoors in his children and grandchildren, inspiring them with his adventurous spirit and 'Sisu' determination. His legacy of hard work and appreciation for nature will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Olavi is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Elisa (Henry Dale); grandsons, Kai (Kriti) and Julian Dale; daughter, Leila; sister, Linda (John Booth) and nephew, Kyle. He was predeceased by his dear aunt, Toini; son, Esa; grandson, George; and nephew, Brandon.
A private burial service will be held for family. A celebration of Olavi's life will be held at Lapland Lake at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Share Winter Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern N.Y., and The Community Hospice of Albany.

Some 40 years ago our son and daughter-in-law introduced us to Lapland Lake which was a wonderful nature escape from Staten Island. We spent wonderful summers, falls and winters there. Our favorite was in the fall when the leaves were radiant and hiking at a premium. Ann was always supportive of our many forays into nature and Olavi too care of the resort lovingly and meticulously. We probably stayed in almost all of the cabins there at one time and found peace and serenity within its confines. Thank Olavi and Ann Hirvonen for the great memories. Condolences to the family.

We spent many happy vacations at Lapland, skiing in the winter and hiking and swimming in Woods Lake in the summer. Our thoughts are with Ann, Leila, and the entire family. We can still see Olavi ski-jouring behind one of his reindeer. Rest in Peace.

Olavi and Ann were the best hosts ever when we came to visit to ski annually and still do; even spent 2 different summer vacations at Lapland Lake. Olavi was a wonderfully warm person who was always interested to have a chat and get to know us. Our heart and thoughts go out to Ann and his family at this time. When we visit again in February we will be sure to ski Olavi's way and toast him fondly. Joanne and David Magavern

I met Olavi at Lapand Lake in December, 1978. I was new to x-country skiing and the conditions were hard and fast. He introduced me to klister. I continued to ski there until we moved to Rochester recently. In the early days I would bring him homemade beer and he would give me some game to eat. He was a good man and Lapland became a major part of my life.

Olavi was a unique lovable character. I have many fond memories from Lapland. I was deciding on which ski boots to choose. Red or black. He assured me I needed to get the red ones, red is faster!

Our memories of 25+ years of Lapland Lake adventures so often highlight Ann & Olavi. His passion and expertise were inspiring and his modesty was genuine - even when I asked him to autograph my mug. He will never be forgotten.
Sending our best to Ann and the family.

Our deepest condolences for Olavi's family. Here Olavi is leaving for US from Finland. He is being seen off by his aunt, Toini Isomäki (nee Ruottu) and her son, Jouko Isomäki (Olavi's cousin) and some other friends and family. The other photo is when Olavi attended Toini's funeral here in Finland in 2000. Olavi was such a remarkable person and will be dearly remembered.

Olavi helped me get fitted for a pair of performance classic skis perhaps 20 years ago now. I think of him ever time I put them on to ski no matter where I go with them. They are still in great condition. Our club, the Garden State Ski Club, had been going up to Lapland Lake for many years, it was the highlight of our ski season. Memories of Olavi and Ann, manicured trails, the fun we had and the tupas still linger on with many of our club members to this day. Condolences to the family.

We have indeed lost a legend. My family and I first met Olavi in 1995 when he introduced the family and I to the joy of cross country skiing at Lapland Lake. For the next 20+ years I saw Olavi nearly twice weekly every week during the winter season. I relied on his advice and his wisdom and wit. I never tired of listening to his stories of all of his adventures. Getting to know his wife Anne and his daughter Leila was special treat. When smooth sailing is needed up in heaven I know that G-d will always call on Olavi, because nobody can groom like he can. As Olavi always reminded me: "Keep your front ski forward!"

Olavi was a good friend to all the skiers who enjoyed Lapland Lake and competitors who shared his friendship. I went with him to scout the Lake property and helped clearing the ski trails. His son Eisa was also a teammate of mine and his tragic early death was a severe blow to Olavia and Hilja. My condolences the family and may he rest in peace.

Lapland Lake is one of my favorite places on earth. I was lucky to discover it in the 70's when it was newly opened and I kept returning over 40 years with friends and husband even when I moved out of state. I will always remember lying in bed in our tupa with the early morning light hearing Olavi creating perfection on the trails with his Piston Bully. Thank you for this unique , peaceful paradise. RIP Olavi. Condolences to Ann and family.

Olavi and Ann are so dear to my heart. They were kind and generous and developed lovely Lapland as a magical place to ski and reunite with nature. It has a spirit which Olavi nurtured through has amazing trail development and maintenance. I was part of a women's group who stayed at Lapland every winter and we cherished our time there. I remember the last time Olavi gave a demonstration of skijoring with his reindeer. He was not a young man! It didn't go as well as he had hoped. He turned to me at the end with his little sheepish grin and whispered "Well, I won't be trying that again". I send my deepest condolences and will light a candle for Olavi tonight.

I will always remember Olavi helpfully critiquing my (often futile) attempts to skate ski! He always had a kind word or cheerful greeting out on the trail. We're thinking of you, Ann. Mike & I send our condolences to you & all the family.
