Orkan Stasior Obituary

Stasior, Orkan George M.D. LOUDONVILLE Orkan George Stasior M.D. passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, in Loudonville, at the age of 89. He was at his home with his wife, Gloria, and family by his side. Born in Toronto, Canada, Orkan graduated with a B.S. and a M.D. from University of Toronto. He completed his medical residency at Bellevue and New York Eye and Ear hospitals in New York City. After marrying the love of his life, Gloria, they moved to Albany in 1960. As a physician, Orkan was a pioneer being recognized domestically and internationally as one of the most esteemed Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons in the country. He was chief of Ophthalmology at Childs Hospital and the Albany Memorial Hospital. He served as director of the Childs Hospital Board of Governors while tirelessly fundraising for the Childs Hospital Foundation. He cofounded and was the second president of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). He received many awards for his innovation, skill and teaching. In the fall of 2019, he was honored at the 50th anniversary of ASOPRS. Orkan was most proud of his mentorship, teaching and training of his graduate surgical fellows, who went on to run prestigious eye centers in the country. He was ahead of his time, by incorporating nutrition, wellness, and mind-body medicine in the care of his patients. For over 50 years, Orkan was a parishioner of St. Pius X Church, a member of Schuyler Meadows Club and a member and trustee of the Fort Orange Club. Orkan was proud of his Polish heritage and his family. He was a lifelong learner who embraced all of life's pursuits with enthusiasm and a cheerful, never give-up attitude. Orkan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gloria; his children, George of Loudonville, Debbie (Jeff) Schumacher of Richmond, Va., Matthew of Newport Beach, Calif., and Lynn (Steve) Stewart of San Francisco; as well as seven grandchildren, Brandon, Christopher, Heather, Abbie, Katharine, Bella and Lindsay. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanislaw and Mary Stasior; and his brother, Richard Stasior. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Dr. Stasior's family on Monday, February 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumitie Road, Loudonville (please enter the church through the Chapel Doorway). Funeral services on Tuesday, February 25, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Loudonville where his funeral Mass will be celebrated. In lieu of flowers, Orkan's request was to make a donation in his name to ASOPRS Foundation at P.O. Box 916048, Longwood, FL, 32791 or at https://www.asoprsfoundation.org. Back in the 70S, My dad was hit by a line drive coaching my little league team. Dr. Stasior was called in. An inning later, same game, I too was hit in the eye with a bad pitch and ended up in the same ER with my dad! I'll never forget the dr's face when he entered the ER and there we both sat with giant black eyes. While mine was without further injury, my dad's entire orbit and cheekbone were destroyed; nothing was holding his eye in but the swelling. Dr. Stasior did emergency surgery, saved his eye, and rebuilt his face and eye socket. After it healed, my Dad never had another problem. What a dr.

Dr. Stasior performed life changing surgery on my eyes in 1976, when I was 5 years old. I'm forever grateful for his talents.

Forty years ago, I was fortunate enough to become Dr. Stasior's fellow. His previous fellow, Dr. Lemke said to me that he has learned so much from him and if he could, he would stay for another year. Indeed, when I finished my training a year later, I felt the same way and said the same to his incoming new fellow. It is indeed a coveted privilege to be his fellow and a special honor to be part of his extended family.

Dr. Stasior was more than a special mentor. He had an unusual teaching style which always motivated you to work even harder and do much better --- his somewhat sarcastic yet encouraging compliments. For example, just when I thought I have done a good job or answered his question satisfactorily, he would say something like: my previous fellow, Dr. so and so, used to do this or that. Or he would meekly murmured something like: my fellows are younger and smarter than I am. They are the best. Of course they have to do better.

He taught by challenging and guiding our thinking processes. He taught us to think and read critically, plan our surgery with a global view and with attention to details, and approach a problem with daring, innovative foresight, and scientific rigor. I recall the numerous after hour reviews and weekend discussions. The pre- and post-operative discussions in the locker room was the best learning experience. It either made me nervous and feel small or it made my day. He required that a surgical plan must have good alternatives, viable solutions for the unexpected, and all with good reasons. As a fellow, I was given surgical write-ups or other scientific paper assignments. He patiently walked me through practically every sentence, every paragraph, and every reference. They just had to be perfect!

He demanded that we give our patients our best and total care: outstanding medical service, compassion, and understanding. He patiently reviewed with me every interesting or unusual patient. He never allowed any patient to leave his office without having all of their questions satisfactorily answered.

He was more than a teacher to me; he was a friend, a colleague, and a fatherly figure. He genuinely cared about me as an individual and wanted the best for me professionally and personally. He was genuinely interested in learning more about my Chinese heritage and China. In the late l980's, he and George, his oldest son, were invited to speak in China. Their entire family went along and enjoyed a most memorable trip. He helped and encouraged the development of oculoplastic specialty in China and other countries. He encouraged me, guided me, and counseled me all along, even long after my fellowship. Over the years, whenever we met, he always asked about my family, my children, and elderly parents.

He was a visionary, a pioneer, and a giant in medicine. He founded a new surgical specialty and led this specialty society to greatness --- which is now admired and respected by all throughout the world. He was a best teacher, most inspiring and creative. Despite all that, he was always kind, gentle, and modest --- constantly giving credits to others. He was blessed with a great family: a loving wife, 4 super-achieving children.

I am proud to be one of his fellows and I always treasure the time spent with him and his family. Needless to say, all of my residents and fellows know him --- the one and only Dr. Starior and his enormous contributions. We all love him dearly.

Let's celebrate his life, his legacy, and cherish his memories.
