ORVILLE EARL SWINDOLL breathed his last breath at 7:50 am on August 10, 2022, at home in Miami, FL.
He was born in El Campo, Texas, on August 5th, 1931, to Lovell Lucille Lundy and Earl Langston Swindoll. Thirteen months after that, he was followed by a sister, Lovell Lucille Swindoll, and later a brother, Charles Rozell Swindoll.
During his childhood, Orville excelled in academics and piano. Shortly after high school graduation, he attended Rice Institute in Houston, with the intention of pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering. He also enlisted in the Navy reserve, where he served for several months in Washington State. While there, he felt God's calling on his life to prepare for ministry. Shortly after that, he enrolled in Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, TX, and by 1951 began his lifelong mission of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In December of 1952, he married the love of his life, Erma Jean Hensley, and over the years they had four children, three girls and a boy.
In 1957 they served as missionaries in Taxco, Mexico, for several months. After a brief return to the United States, in 1958, Orville was invited on a mission trip to Argentina with a friend. This trip was instrumental in redirecting his path. He returned to the USA with plans to move to Argentina with his family. In 1959, they headed to Argentina, where they served the Lord together for over 30 years. In 1991, Orville and Erma Jean returned to the USA and established their base in Miami, FL.
Over the years, Orville continued his ministry in Miami, FL, while providing teaching and leadership to many Spanish speaking countries as well, developing many lifelong friendships and relationships along the way. He established connections in over 20 countries; was one of the founders of Comunidad Cristiana (Christian Community) in Argentina, and his work, teachings and books have reached and blessed thousands around the globe.
After 66 years together, his beloved wife, Erma Jean, passed away in March of 2019.
He is survived by his four children, Erma Lovell Ducasa, Julia Jean Swindoll, Gloria Ana Swindoll-Leache, and David Earl Swindoll, and by a huge family made up of 19 grandchildren (Carolina, Julieta, Cecilia, Ana, Desiree, Michelle, Jessica, Andrew, Johanna, Valerie, Melody, Bryan, Alan, Mark, Jeffrey, Spencer, Grace, James, and William); 22 great grandchildren (Sophia, Christian, Camila, Nathan, Ana, Leah, Jesse, Valerie, Amanda, Emilie, Keanu, Sienna, Enzo, Leon, Noam, Nico, Bryn, Winsley, Ella, Ally, Mark, and Zoe, and another granddaughter on the way, Layla), and by a great-great-granddaughter (Ruby).
He lived a long, blessed, and fruitful life, and will be greatly missed.
There will be a viewing between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm, followed by a memorial service on Tuesday, August 16, at Van Orsdel Funeral Home, 11220 N. Kendall Dr., Miami. The burial will take place at 2:30 pm, at Caballero Rivero Dade South Cemetery, 14200 SW 117 Avenue, Miami, FL. Cars will leave in a procession from the funeral home at 2:00 pm.
