Oscar L. Hayes, 89, of Albany, GA, died peacefully at home on Saturday September 14, 2024 surrounded by his family with the Georgia Bulldogs playing on television. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 20, 2024 at 11:00 am at Mathews Funeral Home. Pastor Dale Hodges will officiate. Interment will follow at 3:30 pm at Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange, GA.
Oscar was born on January 1, 1935 in LaGrange, GA, grew up there and graduated from LaGrange High School in 1952. After High School, he joined the United States Navy and served his Country in Korea. Oscar returned home and was employed with Dunson Mills in LaGrange as an electrician before being employed with Finance America. Oscar was transferred to Sanford, FL, Albany, GA, Birmingham, Al and back to Albany, GA in 1970 where he lived the rest of his life.
In 1988 Oscar began Hayes Appraisal, Inc and worked there until his retirement. He was a member of The First Methodist Church of Albany and Dougherty Lodge # 591 F&AM. Oscar was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Valley of Southwest Georgia. He was also a member of the Hasan Shriners Hospital, where he was a member of the Cartoon Capers and dressed as Mickey Mouse. Oscar was a Coach with Dixie League Baseball and took his team to The1982 World Series. He enjoyed fishing, was a huge Georgia Bulldog Fan and enjoyed his trips to Biloxi.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Margie Hayes of Albany, GA, his children, Donna (Eddie) Odom of Lee County, GA, Debi (Jimbo) Farmer and Chris Hayes all of Albany, GA, a sister, Martha Cash of Opelika, AL, his grandchildren, Morgan Odom of Lee County, GA, Chase Farmer of Atlanta, GA, Blake Farmer of Wilmington, DE, Ethan Hayes of Albany, GA and Mason Hayes of Atlanta, GA and three great -grandchildren, Asa Odom, Marley Odom and Elijah Hayes.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 11:00 am Friday before the service at Mathews Funeral Home.
The family will be gathering at the residence of Debi and Jimbo Farmer on Pendleton Street, Albany, GA, 31721.
Those desiring may make memorials in memory of Oscar to Shriners Hospitals for Children c/o Hasan Shriners Hospital Transportation Fund, 1822 Palmyra Rd., Albany, GA, 31707.
