I took "Introduction to Psychology" with Professor Fernald in 1991. He was an inspiring lecturer who taught us to take joy in the material and to give our best when demonstrating what we had learned. I wish I had returned to study with him further. Thank you Dr. Fernald."

I realize it is over one year since his passing, but just this week I told friends about the best course I ever took. It was his course at Harvard Extension in Harvard Yard. I decided to google him and was sad to hear of his passing. Reading his obituary and all the wonderful comments, brought him, and that time of my life, back to me. It was in the early 80s, (if memory serves me well) and he was the most insightful and delightful professor I have ever had. I can only imagine the pleasure he brought to his family and friends. I have never forgotten him and what he taught us in that one class!

Dodge was a wonderful friend and mentor to me many years ago (1971-74) when I was his teaching assistant at Wellesley College. His kindness, enthusiasm for psychology, appreciation for each individual, and sense of humor inspired me and helped me become a better person during a difficult time in my life. Dodge was one of a kind and his departure leaves a lesser world. My condolences to his family for the loss of this wonderful, loving person. Val Brewer

I just stumbled on this. My condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of Dodge Fernald. Was not able to meet Dodge, but knew of him. My mother Helen Cort Fernald, Provincetown, was always very thankful to Dodge for helping out when my mother was caring for my grandmother Helen Clark Fernald, Lexington during her last days. Sincerest wishes - Cort Fernald

Hello Fernalds. As my first high school soccer coach, Dodge taught us to be fair, to have fun, and to try new skills with optimism. He coached with quiet joy. Remembering our mythical teammate, Mary Grabasandwich, still makes me smile. As does the belief that once that first olive comes out of the jar, others will follow. In my coaching practice, I try to incorporate the best of my own coaches. Dodge is with me on my best days. Peace be with you all. Truly, Alicia Carrillo

I too was fortunate enough to have Professor Fernald, along with Claire Zimmerman, as my professor in Psychology 101 at Wellesley College. It was in 1974. He was such a wonderful teacher; lively, funny and so intelligent and engaging. He was also very warm and supportive of a sometimes anxious freshman! That class was very influential in my choice of a major and a career for which I am very appreciative.
I am sure that he is deeply missed by his family but hope that you are comforted by memories from many years.

Marjorie, Cin, Darce, Steph and Kirk - My thoughts, love and condolences to you all. Dodge was, and will always be, a pivotal person in the life of so many of us Wellesley soccer playing boys. I continue to be thankful for the love that all of you showed me, Sully, Dicky, Max, Mase and others as we joined Kirk rampaging through your house, playing with soccer balls, Fusbal tables, and lab rats. It's a childhood that I treasure and have tried to replicate for my three daughters. I was, at least, successful in coaching the A-B Hotspur, replete with the requisite cheer. Alabeem, Alaboom, Alabeem, Boom, Bah. Wellesley (A-B) Hotspur.. Ganara! As sad as I am to learn of Dodge's passing, I look forward to seeing you all on April 15th.

At age 21 back in 1979, I had my very first university teaching experience as Dodge's assistant at the Harvard summer school. What a wonderful guy -- warm, funny, insightful, caring, and dedicated to his profession. He was a terrific teacher, a sparkling writer, and a great person.

My love to Marjorie, Kirk, Stephanie, Darcy, Lucinda and all Dodge's grandchildren including my two nephews, Maxwell and Liam. It was a pleasure having so many good times with Dodge at family gatherings. His humor i will always remember. Fondly, Liz

Oh how well I remember your dad, always with verve and mischief, and such agility of mind and body both! Feel fortunate to have known in succession all of his remarkable daughters. Sending my sympathy out to you too, Kirk, and to Marjorie.

Professor Fernald was my psychology 101 professor at Wellesley College in 1970. He was a wonderful teacher. I remember a chapter of his book showing a photo of a monkey peering through a window in a door who had performed multiple tasks just to look through the window. The subject of the chapter was curiosity. Also, he explained how to toilet train children using rewards - I think it was M&Ms..... I remembered and used that system many years later when I had children.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
