Owana Hunter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whiting's Funeral Home - Williamsburg on Jan. 8, 2026.
"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." - 2 Corinthians 5:8

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful transition of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Owana Hamilton Hunter, who entered eternal rest on January 5, 2026.

Owana was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her family deeply. Family was the center of her life, and her love extended across generations. She enjoyed singing, dancing, shopping, and spending meaningful time with those she loved, always carrying herself with grace and dignity.

She faithfully served as a Housing Authority Officer for the Department of Defense for 36 years. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards and commendations in recognition of her dedicated service and professionalism, and she retired with honor. Born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Owana lived a fulfilling life as part of a military family and had the opportunity to travel and experience many places throughout the world.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Maddox Bruce and Lenora Hamilton; her grandmother Bertha Bruce; and her son Benny Lewis Hunter, whose legacy lives on through his children Demarius Hunter and Nyahsa Lewis.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children and grandchildren, Jimmy Hunter, wife Robin, and their children, Trey, Kanesha, and Bryce; Michael Hunter and his children, Chanel, Aaron, and Michael Jr.; Jermaine Hunter and his children, Jayla, Jemir, Luke, and Josslin; Kareem Hunter, wife Linda, and their children, Karmine and Karmelo; Samia Hunter and her children, Kamon, Jada, and Justice; Monique Hunter, husband Rocky, and their children, Melanie, Aiden, Ricky, and Rocky Jr.; Marcus Hunter, wife Lee, and their children, Aeri and Ashton. She is also survived by Samuel Hunter, the father of her children, who remained a vital and supportive presence in her life; and a host of great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, along with extended family members and friends.

"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." - Ecclesiastes 12:7

A memorial service celebrating the life of Owana Hamilton Hunter will be held on January 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Whiting's Funeral Home.
