Flanner Buchanan - Broad RipplePamela Kay Hutson Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, March 26, 2026 after a brief illness. She was born in Joliet, Illinois to James and Elvira Hutson on November 27, 1948.
After her family moved to the South Bend area, she attended Mishawaka High School in Mishawaka, Indiana and married her high school sweetheart (who went to rival Penn High School), Bruce Smith on August 31, 1968. After she worked to put Bruce through law school at the University of Michigan, they moved to Newport, Rhode Island while he was in OIS in the US Navy JAG Corps, following which, they were based in San Diego, California, where their son, Donald was born, followed by a posting in Port Hueneme, California. In 1975, after Bruce was discharged from the Navy, they made their home in Indianapolis where they spent the rest of their lives.
Pam was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elvira; her beloved husband, Bruce; her brother Jim; and sisters Carol and Linda.
She is survived by her sister, Joan, son, Donald, her daughter-in-law, Denise, three amazing grandchildren (who were her whole life), June (27), Kevin (24), and Allison (20) and more nieces and nephews than we can name here (all of whom she loved very deeply).
A celebration of Pam’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 1-4 at Hillcrest County Club, 6098 Fall Creek Road, Indianapolis, IN 46220, where she was an active member in the Ladies Happy Hour golf group.
In lieu of flowers, please direct donations in her name to the Assistance League of Indianapolis - Project SchoolBell was dear to her heart - or the Hillcrest Historic Foundation.
