Clemmie Pollard Long, Jr., was born on Thursday, September 18, 1952, to the proud parents of Reverend Clemmie P. Long, Sr., and Mrs. Elizabeth Grinstead Long. Affectionately known as “Junior”, he grew up in the Cedar Street/Brandon Hill neighborhood of Clarksville, Tennessee. His parents preceded him in death. “Junior” gave his life to Christ at the tender age of eight years old and was baptized by his father, Rev. Clemmie Long, Sr, he united with the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where his father pastored. He faithfully served as a member of the Junior Ushers and Choir No. 2. Junior loved Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and attending the Cumberland River South Kentucky Middle Tennessee District Association Sunday School and BTU Congress.
Clemmie attended Bailey Cobb Elementary School thru 6 grade and Historic Burt High School and was a graduate Class of 1970, the last class to graduate from Burt. He was self-employed and owner of Long’s Concrete Company.
On Saturday, August 16, 1975, Junior united in holy matrimony with Ethel Clarice Bell this union was blessed with a daughter and a son. In 1976, Clemmie united with Williams Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, faithfully serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and later as Associate Minister. He accepted the Call to Ministry in 1991 under the leadership of Pastor Charles H. Williams and licensed to preach the gospel on March 24, 1991. On March 22, 1992, he was ordained at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church., was called to pastor Haynes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Dotsonville Community Sunday in April 5, 1992. He was a graduate of CRSKMTBDA School of Religion, Class of 1999. With great love, teaching, preaching the will of God, one of his greatest passions was to encourage and bring healing to all through the word of God. His motto to the church family was to “Go With What You Got” God will please. A small congregation, but so large at heart and all things accomplished through God and prayer. Pastor Long pastored actively 33 years and 5 months at Haynes Chapel until God called him to his eternal rest.
Our beloved Pastor, husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, and friend never met a stranger and touched the hearts of many people from all walks of life. His personal life ministry mirrored that which he sought for the church to live in God’s (Bible) word through being faithful and committed. Clemmie was active in sports during his high school years. He fell in love with bowling was introduced to it in 1975 by his brothers-in-law became an avid amateur bowler. He was awarded rings from PBA Tour Amateur Bowling Tournament for participation in April 2004 for 300 game series. He was a member of three bowling teams: The Late Comers (Eastgate Lanes), Xplosive State and The King Pins. He enjoyed employment for more than 20 years with Pinnacle Family Entertainment working in the Pro Shop.
Precious memories are left to be shared and cherished by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, five months, Ethel C. Bell Long; daughter, Veronica Dennetta (Vernon III) Stem, the daughter he loved so dear; son, Clemmie P. Long, III “Trey”, the man that he wanted to stand tall in every aspect of life; grandchildren: Vernon “VJ”, Lamar and Victor, his heartbeats; sister, Cherie Y. Long; nieces: Valerie Bosley, Tonya Bosley, all of Clarksville, TN; great-niece, De’Ahara Lynnaee; nephews: Xavier Harris, Eric Hoosier, Timothy Hoosier, DeWayne Merriweather; brothers-in-law: James L. (Zelema) Hoosier, St. Louis, MO, Richard Bell, Jr., Clarksville, TN; caregiver, Patricia White; BHS Class of 1970; the Local Bowling Team League and a host of family and friends.
Pastor Clemmie preached the word in season and out of season. He endured hardships as a good soldier and discharged all of his duties as a chosen servant of Jesus Christ. He fought the good fight, he finished the race and he kept the faith. He will receive the crown of righteousness which God has prepared just for him.
Clemmie has left a legacy on this side of heaven! We will miss him. God loved him more and we accept God’s will and walk forward on God’s promises. Servant, WELL DONE!
