Patricia Burke

Patricia Anne Burke passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the age of 100 at her home in South Boston, the neighborhood where she lived her entire life. She was born to Mary Margaret Bates and Patrick Joseph Burke in August 1924 in South Boston. Her official birth date is August 26, but she maintained she was born at home weeks before her birth was officially registered. She was predeceased by her five siblings: Bernard, Katherine, Mary, John, and Joseph.
Patricia had several jobs, including as a bookkeeper and a quality control inspector for Gillette. After their parents' passing, Patricia and her sister Mary lived together for decades in various apartments in South Boston. They loved to travel, visiting Hawaii, California, Niagara Falls, and their parents' native Ireland. They were also devoted aunts to their siblings' children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, providing love and support as well as a quick-witted sense of humor.
When Mary became too ill to remain at home, Patricia visited her daily at Marian Manor nursing home until Mary's passing in 2013, continuing the selfless devotion to family that characterized her entire life. In the 11 years following Mary's death, Patricia lived alone in the Waterview Apartments on Columbia Road in South Boston and was fiercely committed to her independence. She insisted on walking or taking the bus for her grocery shopping well into her 90s, admonishing family members who tried to "baby" her.
She could be found many Sunday afternoons having lunch with her extended family at the Seapoint Bar and Grille and watching Boston sports teams. She enjoyed family trips around the city, marveling at how South Boston had changed. Everyone who knew Patricia found a woman youthful in spirit and deed. When asked to give a speech at her 90th birthday, she thanked everyone for coming and quipped that she would "see everybody in another 10 years." She indeed lived to celebrate her 100th birthday with friends and family, including four generations of nieces and nephews who loved "Aunt Pat" dearly and will miss her greatly. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, January 23rd at 10 AM at St. Augustine's Chapel followed by interment at Cedar Grove Cemetery and a celebration of life at the Seapoint Bar and Grille.
