Patricia ("Patty") Goren, wife of Ed Goren-former president and executive producer of Fox Sports-who became a friend and guiding spirit to many personalities in sports broadcasting, died on November 13th, in Rolling Hills, CA. She was 82.
Patty's ebullient spirit, fearlessness, and love of life were inspiring and irresistible. Though her husband was the executive, Patty was the star. People from every walk of life--from former presidents and celebrities to shopkeepers and service staff--were charmed and delighted by her beauty, style, and wit. She had an uncanny ability to talk to anyone, anywhere, and though it was impossible not to be drawn in by her rapid-fire questions (no topic was off limits), she treated everyone with kindness and genuine curiosity. She simply wanted to know you.
Long time friend and sportscaster, Jim Nantz, said of Patty: "[She was] one of the most special people I've ever met." Michael Strahan, television host and former Hall of Fame defensive end for the New York Giants said simply: "Patty was my angel. She changed my life forever."
Born in 1943, Patty grew up in Detroit, Michigan as the youngest of four siblings. Her father, John Dunleavy, was an Irish immigrant who owned a bar in Detroit, and her mother, Sally, was his loving wife and right hand. Patty began her 30-year career with American Airlines as a flight attendant, eventually becoming a flight supervisor and a special services manager, handling VIP clients.
She met the love of her life, Ed Goren, in 1984 when they were seated next to each other on an American Airlines flight to Seattle. Their forty-year marriage was legendary and their partnership truly enviable.
Patty is preceded in death by beloved members of her family--her parents (John and Sally), her brother (Jack Dunleavy), sisters (Mary Florence O'Brien and Sally Jo Luyckx), brother-in-law (Larry Luyckx), sister-in-law (Bonnie McIntyre Dunleavy), nephew (Sean Duncan Dunleavy), and niece (Kathleen Sarah O'Brien Habucke), as well as her beloved golden retriever "fur babies" (Bogie, Lucy, Scout, and Duncan).
She is survived by her husband, Ed, her stepsons, Greg Goren and Robert Perlmutter, her adoring nieces and nephews (Dr. Sean O'Brien, Patrick O'Brien, Daniel O'Brien, Sheila Zuieback, Mary Beth Luyckx, Trisha Krotenberg, Henry Aberle), their spouses and partners (Jiji O'Brien, Donna O'Brien, Michael Zuieback, Marshall Krotenberg, Bill Ittounas, Game Aberle), and their children (Eric Krotenberg, Hailey Krotenberg, Sydney Zuieback, Brendan Zuieback, Kyle O'Brien and Meghan O'Brien). She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lisa Goren and brothers-in-law, George O'Brien and Allan Goren. They cherish her memory and will hold her in their hearts forever.
Patty will be laid to rest in Scottsdale, AZ in a private ceremony. A memorial and celebration of her life will be held early next year.
