Patricia Johnson Hall

Patricia Johnson Hall, our beloved matriarch and a true Southern lady in all ways, passed away on September 18, 2024. She was a woman of great Christian faith who loved her family with all her might, her church and her little community of Smithfield.

Pat was born December 9, 1936 and raised in Surry, VA, the only daughter of Majorie Kincaid and Albert Sydney Johnson. She attended Surry High School and it was during that time she met this really cute boy from Smithfield who became the true love of her life, Franklin Edward Hall. They were 19 years old when they married on Christmas Day 1955, a union that lasted 69 years. 

A talented seamstress, Pat also excelled at knitting and crocheting, leaving behind scores of baby blankets, afghans, and scarves her children and grandchildren will cherish forever. She loved making costumes at the Smithfield Little Theatre in the 1970s. Art and crafting were also her thing and she never met a thrift store or a garage sale she didn’t love.  

When her husband started his own pallet business in 1979, Pat worked together with Frank in the garage of their family home on Lumar Road. She was the first bookkeeper for Hallwood Enterprises Inc. and took great pride in their entrepreneurship and the thriving company now located in downtown Smithfield.  

Pat was devoted to her Trinity United Methodist Church and there weren’t many Sunday mornings that she and Frank couldn’t be found sitting side by side on the left, fifth row back. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Women and Susannah Wesley Circle and could always be counted on for a casserole or dessert.  

She graduated from Paul D. Camp Community College with an associate’s degree in art. She loved history all her life and spent countless hours researching genealogy, not only her own but helping others trace their roots. She served as both curator and administrator of the Isle of Wight Museum. 

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) also became one of her passions after retirement and she was so proud of the work her group did to spread the love of history near and far. She was a dedicated member and held many leadership titles including Regent, past Regent and Honorary Regent of the Colonel William Allen Chapter. She loved attending meetings and conventions across the state. She was also a member of the UDC, and a patriotic woman whose red, white and blue spirit was evident everywhere in her life. 

Pat was a kind soul with a dry sense of humor and generous spirit. She had a no-nonsense attitude and most definitely knew how to get things done. She loved entertaining and decorating her beautiful home for the seasons and was well-known for her themed trees kept out year-round in various rooms around the house. She was a painter, a pianist, a cake decorator and made her own doll clothes.  

In addition to her husband, Frank, she is survived by her three children; Franklin Edward Hall Jr. (Susan), Mark Johnson Hall (JoAnn) and Lisa Hall Miller (Jason); 15 grandchildren; Maggie Stoup (James), Michael Hall, Savannah Krauk (Rob), Hayley Hall, Russell Frohman (Chrisie), Zachary Balasko (Allen), Peyton Balasko (Jennifer), Alexander Balasko, Grace Chiles (Landry), Madison Balasko, Isabella Miller, Jamison Miller, Lilly Anna Miller, Jordan Miller (Makayla) and Sonny Miller (Isabel); and 9 great-grandchildren; Erika Lynne, Paxton, Camden, Eleanor, Benjamin, Jonah, Baker, Kato and Emilie. 

She is also survived by sisters- and brothers-in law; Earl Hall, Olive Hall, Rae Hall, Eunice Appelman (Roy), Cherry Keith, Robert Hall, Phillip Hall; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Johnson; brother-in-law,Cleveland Hall; and sister-in-law Mary Ristagno. 

In addition to family, Pat had many, many friends in Smithfield and around the world, including lifelong friend Gayle Brown who was like a sister to her. 

A funeral will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Smithfield with the Rev. Dan Kim. The family will receive friends at a reception in the Family Life Center immediately following the church service. The interment will follow the reception at St. Luke’s Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Trinity UMC, Smithfield,; Gimme Shelter, or the DAR.
