She was 71. Patti was the daughter of James and Joyce Mathena of Charleston. A 1972 graduate of South Charleston High School, Patti married her high school sweetheart, Phil Hickman, and resided in South Charleston, where they would go on to celebrate 53 wonderful years of marriage. After years of taking care of family & home, Patti went back to school, and in 1993, graduated with honors, first in her class, and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from WV State College. Mrs. Hickman taught kindergarten at Montrose Elementary for 24 years, where she made lifetime friends with fellow educators and helped shape the lives of hundreds of students.
Patti prioritized God, making memories with her family and cherished friends, listening to and attending church services with her family, having so much fun with her daughters-in-law, and traveling to watch her grandsons' football games or swim meets. Patti also enjoyed singing and her love of music. She was always busy helping others. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, Patti bravely fought the good fight, becoming an advocate for breast cancer survivors. Patti's positive, loving attitude and strength never wavered, and her Christian faith has impacted so many who knew her.
Thank you for being the best wife, mom, maw-maw, sister, daughter, teacher and friend. We love you. Patti is survived by her loving husband Phil, mother Joyce, sister Brenda Rader (Steve) of South Charleston, brothers-in-law Ned Hickman of Evans, David (Cheryl) Hickman of Daniels, son Brian (Jennifer) of Hurricane, son Joe (Heather) of Bridgeport, and grandsons Zachary and Luke whom she loved with all her heart. Patti also loved her dear friends Pam Potter and Janie Fultz, thank you for your enduring friendship over all these decades!
A tribute to the life of Patti will be at 1:00 PM Friday November 7, 2025, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a donation to be made to The Maddox Potter Foundation.
