Patricia Kern

Homemaker, Game Enthusiast, Golfer Patricia Ann 'Patsy' Kern, died Saturday, June 2, after a brief battle with cancer, at her home in Naples, Florida, with the love of her life, her husband Fred, by her side. Patsy was born on March 21, 1937 to Clifford and Ann Stretmater in Washington DC. She spent her early years in Takoma Park and attended the Academy of Holy Names where she made several lifelong friends. She met her husband while attending the Univ of MD, and completed her degree years later at Ladycliff College, in Highland Falls, NY, while Fred was a football coach at USMA. The family moved several times with Fred's coaching and business career changes and spent several years in the Baltimore and Harford County area. Patsy was a talented decorator and seamstress and loved spending time making each house a home. She also enjoyed creating custom matching outfits for special occasions for the family. Patsy always had fond memories of summers spent in Cape May, NJ with family and friends. She was an avid golfer and a competitive member of the WPGA at MGCC in Bel Air. She competed in and won both individual and team championships. Patsy was a volunteer for the Highlands School and played an integral part in the library renovations, receiving the Highland Award in 2008. Patsy loved doing crossword puzzles and playing games; Rummikub was her favorite and she started a weekly group in Naples. She had a competitive spirit and was a great friend to all. She had boundless energy, a great sense of humor, and will be dearly missed. She is survived by her husband of 60 years this month, Fred, her brother Clifford Stretmater (Carol), of Clarksville, MD, a sister Nancy Anderson (Bob), of Warrenton, VA, 2 sisters-in-law, Betty Kern and Madeline Kern, of Abingdon, MD, her five children, Frederick G Kern III (Sandi), of Washington, PA, Kathy Halstead (Jerry), of Carterville, IL, Joanne Davis, of Carterville, IL, Mary Pat Shortt, of Towson, MD, Susan Rivadeneyra (Pedro), of San Francisco, CA, 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
