Patricia Ann Koehmstedt, age 80, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center, Eureka, S.D.
Funerals services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 5, 2025 at Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka, led by Father Michael Griffin.
Born on November 1, 1944, in Langdon, Patricia, known affectionately as Pat, was the daughter of Lawrence and Irene (Gendreau) Koehmstedt.
She grew up in Langdon and graduated from St. Alphonsus School before pursuing her lifelong passion for nursing. Pat began her formal training at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D., completing the college's three-year nursing program. Her dedication to healthcare led her to further her education with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Denver, Colo. Pat's nursing career was marked by compassion and commitment. In 1966, she began working at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, where she spent two years caring for patients on the post-surgical ward and later in the operating room. She then moved to Denver and continued her work at the University of Colorado Hospital during the 1970s. Seeking a quieter life closer to nature, Pat relocated to the mountains near Leadville, Colo. There she worked night shifts in the OB ward at a small Catholic hospital. Later, she settled in Glenwood Springs and continued her night work on both the OB and general floors of the local hospital. Pat's love for caregiving extended beyond her professional life.
At just ten years old, she played an instrumental role in helping raise her younger sisters, triplets Wanda, Wanona, and Wanette, after praying fervently for a baby sister. Her bond with them remained strong throughout her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her brother, Gary (Shirley) Koehmstedt of Meridian, Idaho; sisters, Wanette (Jim) Filek of Stevensville, Mont. and Wanona Goetz of Eureka; brother-in-law, Don Beck of Baker, Mont.; and fifteen nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Wanda Beck and her parents, Lawrence and Irene.
Pat had an adventurous spirit that carried into every aspect of her life. She found joy in walking, hiking, rollerblading, and traveling extensively through state and national parks as well as abroad. But more than anything else, skiing was her greatest passion, she would hit the slopes every chance she got. Her zest for life was matched only by her love for Elvis Presley; she attended his concerts whenever possible and cherished his music deeply.
Those who knew Pat will remember her as someone who made friends wherever she went, a woman whose kindness and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She held dear all of her friends and family members and especially treasured the lifelong friendships that enriched her journey. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Avera Eureka Healthcare Center for their exceptional care and support during Pat's time there.
Honorary bearers will be Pat's nieces and nephews.
Casket bearers will be Robert Froning of Eureka; Cody Lorentzen of Washburn; Kyle Vandenburg of Solon; Jim Filek of Stevensville, Mont.; Michelle Moser of Baker, Mont.; and Tami Filek of Boise, Idaho.
Pat's funeral will be livestreamed on the Lien Family Funeral Care Facebook page.
