Patricia Ann Lewis-Romans

Patricia Ann Lewis-Romans was, in short, a blessed woman who touched countless lives during her 71 years. Her gifts of joy, compassion, and a genuine love for people permeated all aspects of daily life.

Her talent for connecting with others served her well in a 25-year career as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for Pennsylvania. Prior to that she was a director of the Bonaventure Boys Home on Grand Cayman Island. She devoted her professional career to helping people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities heal, grow, and learn to take pride in themselves.

Growing up surrounded by her large family provided ample opportunity develop her “soft skills” crucial for keeping harmony, or at least for preventing total mayhem. Pat was blessed with empathy, creativity, adaptability, patience and good communication skills. She was an avid reader who held library cards in every city and town she lived in. She subscribed to cultural magazines and local newspapers alike. And she was a wizard with the daily cryptogram, sudoku, and the crossword. Pat utilized her large vocabulary to speak with all walks of life. She could strike up a conversation with anyone, and what often started as idle chit-chat could quickly morph into in-depth conversations that opened the door to new adventures and life-long friendships.

Lending support and encouragement was another gift that Pat embodied, and one she would happily share. She was the best cheerleader. Whatever was needed -- a listening ear, thoughtful advice, some cash, or a loving kick in the butt, it was only one call away and always given freely without a second thought. She understood the value of collective cooperation and the power in simply showing up for people. She understood that we get farther when we join hands with others, build bridges, and forge strong connections. She was not afraid to roll up her sleeves and do the work required to create and sustain healthy communities. Pat regularly volunteered her time with urban farms, senior centers, church and youth groups.

Through it all, Pat prioritized her peace, physically and spiritually. Walking, swimming, aerobics and dancing complimented a love of preparing nutritious meals. The word of God nourished her spirit and brought her comfort in times of need. She appreciated and cultivated space for serenity and stillness among all that God blessed her with. Be it in a backyard garden, a beachside pavilion, or her kitchen table at sunrise.

Pat was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 7, 1954, and was raised in a loving family of seven siblings and two half siblings of parents John L. Lewis Sr. and Essie M. Lewis (Gross). She was baptized and completed her elementary education at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church. Pat attended Hallahan Catholic High School for Girls in North Philadelphia and Cardinal Dougherty High School in Germantown. She earned her BA in Social Work at Temple University and a MA in Rehabilitation Counseling at George Washington University.

Patricia was preceded in death by her father and mother; siblings: John L. Lewis, Jr. (Alberta), Amos Benefield (Cora), Beverly Mayfield, Vivian Lewis, and Veronica Lewis.

She is survived by a devoted family and a host of dear friends to hold her memory in their hearts. Kenneth, her loving husband of 42 years and Aneesa, her daughter (Ange Bean). Her siblings: William Lewis (Veronica), Deborah Lewis, Theresa Lewis-King, Gregory Lewis, Ralph Mayfield (Beverly), Michael Romans (Lillian), and David Romans. Her nieces and nephews: Troy, Darryle Sr., Michael Jr., Regina, Pam (Tommy), Gail, Melanie, LaTonya, Dionne (Rodney), Kimberly (Mark), Jevon, Maya (Brian), Marcus, Mikael (Scott), Terri (Mark), Akil, Vashti, Jamin, and Devon. Great nieces and nephews: LaKeisha (Ato), LaNeaya, Damitriah, Imani, Malik, Darryle Jr., Marcus, Kirsten, Jaden, Mark Jr., Micah, Jonah, Coralye, Uriah, Ayanna, Ava, Asa, Lawson, Hendrix, and Lewis. Great-great nieces: Leila, LeAnna, and LaShea
