Patricia Loeber Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dapson Chestney Funeral Home - Rhinebeck on Jul. 31, 2025.
Patricia Anne Loeber (Spillane), born September 20, 1935, at Irwin Sanitarium in Queens, NY, passed away at home, surrounded by family, on July 23, 2025.

A longtime resident of the Hudson Valley, her family moved to Rhinebeck when she was 10 years old, and a year later to Red Hook. She was a member of the Class of 1953 at Linden Avenue School, where she met Michael Burgevin; they married and had five children. In 1973, Patricia married Robert Loeber.

Pat's recently deceased son from her first marriage, Philip, was affected by mental illness-she advocated on his behalf and was a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This was a large part of her life, giving her deep meaning and purpose.

Pat had a passion for early childhood education, earning her teaching degree from SUNY New Paltz. She enjoyed a long career teaching the early grades in the Rhinebeck school district at Chancellor Livingston Elementary School. She believed that every child is unique. Many students and their parents have fond memories and deep admiration for her. Pat's colleagues from her teaching years remained close friends, and those relationships were a central part of her life. Pat was a warm and loving grandmother, sharing her love of the Hudson River, nature, opera, and classical music with her grandchildren-and passing on her sense of wonder in a way they'll always remember.

She made her home in Rhinecliff, where she raised her children, and was fortunate to enjoy a beautiful view of the river she loved so dearly. Pat and Bob's pool on the riverbank became a welcoming gathering place for relatives, friends, and neighbors. The pair also operated a bed & breakfast, admired for the hosts' warmth and the home's charm, and they enjoyed meeting people from around the country and the world.

In 2008, Pat sold her house and moved to The Woods in Rhinebeck. Though sad to leave her Hudson River, she made new friends and remained a treasured friend to old ones. A lifelong learner, she took adult classes over the years at both Dutchess Community College and Bard College's Lifetime Learning Institute.
Pat will be deeply missed in the Rhinebeck community and beyond. As a mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher, her kind and warmhearted nature will be remembered for years to come. She touched the lives of many, in many ways.

Pat was predeceased by her parents, Gerald and Mildred Spillane; her husband, Robert Loeber; her son, Philip Burgevin; and her brother, Gerald W. Spillane.

She is survived by her daughters, Michele, Renee, Jan, and Julie Burgevin; her beloved grandchildren-Joshua (Lavinia), Savannah (Liam Henneberry), and Milena Cosenza, and Willem, Olivia, and Niklas Hallstein; her great-grandchild, Roma Moon Cosenza; and stepchildren, Robert, Thomas, and Jeffrey Loeber, and Sherry Dunn. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Patricia Spillane, Judith Burgevin Johnson, and Linda Loeber; brothers-in-law, Jules Burgevin and Daniel Burgevin; and a number of dear cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Hudson Valley Hospice for its caring and supportive assistance. Appreciation also goes to Rhinebeck at Home, which was a valuable resource for Patricia in recent years. As she was good friends with my grandmother, Dot Russell, Mrs. Loeber has been a well-loved name in my home & heart for decades. With a warm hug or a kind word to share, she always had a way of making you feel special. Mrs. Loeber will be remembered for her sincerely sweet & gentle nature, spreading joy to everyone she encountered. Her phone calls will truly be missed. "Until next time, goodbye Mrs . Loeber."
Our deepest condolences to her friends & family. May her loved ones find peace & comfort in knowing how loved they were by such an amazing woman.

My late wife, Jeannie, and I met Pat in the early 70´s through their connection as elementary teachers at Chancellor. Our friendship grew at that time with their occasional generous parties at their Rhinecliff home. A decade later and with their pool overlooking the Hudson, our young family was invited throughout the summer to many pool picnics along with her many friends connected with the school.

We remained friends through the years and witnessed the love and warmth that she expressed to her family and friends. More recently, with Pat living in The Woods in Rhinebeck, I would try to visit weekly for an hour or so. During these visit I was truly amazed with the mental recollection and sharpness of this remarkable "young" and beautiful lady.

I know that Pat will be missed greatly by family and friends. May we meet again and enjoy conversations with a glass of red wine.
